Your options are Trichomonas, a protozoan, or Gardnerella, a coccal bacteria.
I did a google search on the antibiotic you wrote, but it comes up with nothing.
You MUST have a smear done because the two are very different. Trichomonas must be treated with antibiotics. Metronidazole. But Gardnerella can be treated with natural, live culture yoghurt.
If it is Gardnerella this means one bacterial type has overgrown and the good bacteria are not present. Antibiotic therapy will not clear it up because the problem is one of imbalance and not infection.
The way to re-establish Lactobacillus, which is the normal bacteria in the vagina, is to use a natural, live culture yoghurt. You need to insert yoghurt into the vagina three times per day for about 2 weeks.
How to insert? Get an irrigating syringe from the pharmacy and cut the curved pointy tip off with a pair of scissors. This type of syringe can contain maybe 20 ml of yoghurt and that's about how much you require per dose.
Many thanks. GP managed the swab but smear too painful. Swab came back ok so I don't understand why infection would not have shown up. She us sending me to hospital to have smear done , not looking forward to because it will be excruciating. The other name for antibiotic was flagyl prob wrong spelling.
If you have Gardnerella, then the yoghurt in the vagina will begin to provide relief immediately. Doesn't hurt to try even before you go to the hospital.
The problem with using an antibiotic for this sort of situation is that it willy nilly wipes out all the bacteria. Meantime what you need is re-establishment of a healthy microbiome which requires Lactobacillus.
Just make sure you are using LIVE culture plain, unflavoured, unadulturated, natural yoghurt and not some sugar added, fruit bottom type.
The Lactobaciilus from the yoghurt will outcompete the Gardnerella and provide an environment where Lactobacillus will re-establish the correct balance.
Technically, Gardnerella isn't really an STD even though some refer to it as one. Everyone has some Gardnerella in the vagina, just it's a very small part of the entire microbiome. It's like with Candida. We all have some. But it doesn't cause a problem unless the situation is unbalanced due to injury (i.e. having sex when not lubricated/turned on. Probably Gardnerella is in that category as well.)
Souter, start with the yoghurt anyway between now and your appointment with the specialist. it may be a simple cure or there may be something else going on.
