Hashimoto and (trans-vaginal tape operation

In February 2017 I had an operation for stress incontinence. I was fit and well before my operation. After my operation I did bounce back like I have when having operations. Very tiredslurred speak, brain fog, 2 stone weight gain and many other issues. After a tests and a few months later I was diagnose with hashimoto disease and low vitamin D. There has been a lot on the news about how bad the mesh that they use in the operation effects people.

Could it be that my body tried to reject it, but got confused and attacked my thyroid? Would be interested if anyone has had this problem or their thoughts on it.

If nitrous oxide (laughing gas) was used as one of the gases in your anaesthetic then it will have damaged the vitamin B12 stores in your body. If you had plenty to begin with then it is unlikely to make a big difference to you, but if your reserves were low before surgery then you can end up severely deficient after anaesthesia.

All the info you need on the subject can be found in this link :

b12-vitamin.com/anesthesia/

For a list of signs and symptoms of a B12 deficiency, see this link :

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

You can get your Active Vitamin B12 level tested through the post with a finger prick test here :

medichecks.com/vitamin-b12-...

or Active B12 and folate tests :

medichecks.com/vitamin-b12-...

If you ask your doctor for the test, and they agree to do it then, in the UK at least, they are most likely to do a serum B12 test which is not reliable.

I think it's more likely that you had the Hashi's before the operation, and that's why you had stress incontinence in the first place. Hypothyroidism weakens muscles, so likely to affect that muscle, too.

The problem with the mesh is something else entirely. I don't know if your body would try and reject it, but I don't think your immune system could get confused between the thyroid and down there. They're entirely different structures. :)

Thanks, just a thought, and was interested in people’s thoughts.

I didn’t know that the thyroid issue could have stress incontinence, so I have learned something. 😊

Stress incontinence is just a name. The muscles weaken for lots of reasons, hypo is just one of them.

Hi Dangermole I am the same as you - had mesh inserted for stress incontinence in 2005 and developed Hashimotos after that but was misdiagnosed for around 6 yrs. am trying to find a link between the mesh and Hashimoto’s - lots of ancecdotal evidence out there but also research papers saying no evidence although with the might that big pharma exudes such control, I’m not sure I believe the research papers - I wondered if you’d got any more information on links as I am going to see my gynaecologist who has dismissed out of hand the link already so arrogantly that I’d like to put something in front of him next appt. I can’t sue because of the 10yr rule and don’t want to particularly but I do want some kind of acknowledgement/empathy which is sadly lacking from most of the medical people I’ve seen.

Hi, I found all my information on sling the mesh and mesh uk Facebook page I got sick 16days after operation and was then diagnosed with hashimoto disease, my thyroid tests previous to operation was fine. I also have leg pain. I got my Gp to refer me to a mesh removal specialist.

Thank you for these - was disgusted with dr I saw on tues - arrogant and unsympathetic- completely in damage limitation mode even though I can’t sue due to having the mesh put in over 10 yrs ago. I’m going back with as much evidence as I can put under their noses and that’s what everyone should do if they encounter the attitude I got - if a car has a fault the companies recall the car - the NHS should have been made to do the same with us.
