Is low estrogen linked to dementia

My Mum has short term memory loss which is getting worse. I have read that low or non-existent estrogen is linked to memory problems. Has anyone had any good or bad results using estrogen replacement?

I haven't personally had a cause to use it but you might find this an interesting link:-

which seems to confirm your thoughts re your Mum.

Thanks for the link, its very informative and I shall definately take my Mum to see Dr P. I have taken Mum to the doctors for over 2 years about her memory loss and nothing has been done until I complained to the practice manager and she finally got a test last week. An MRI appointment has been made at last but she is getting bad now. I was constantly told it was her age, the memory clinic said it was total baloney! Doesn't give one faith in any doctor.

I have also read that Zinc and Vitamin B3 in particular are essential for brain health.

I also forgot the important of B12 but your Mum should have it chedked before she takes any sublingual supplements.

My relative was misdiagnosed with ME for years and then dementia. It was severe B12 deficiency.

This should always be checked first as deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebral spinal fluid below 550 pg/ml and is reversible as long as treated without delay.

I have been told that the falling levels of pregnenolone ( that occurs with ageing) causes memory loss. you can supplement with pregnenolone, but as it is a ormone this should be done carefully.

Thanks Xanthe, I had bought some and gave them to Mum, very low dose but she got very sleepy. Not sure if it was the Pregnenalone but will try it again. At age 91 and with memory getting worse its just a matter of trying. I will be very careful but its worth another try.
