Hi. I had my b12 tested and the result was 377 with a range of 180-900. How does that sound. Also had my antibody TPO measured and it was 35 with a normal range <60. Thanks for your help 😀

I don't know how old you are - but it is suggested that B12 needs to be around 1000 to prevent cognitive decline :-) Anti-bodies look fine....

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I am 34 and have had hashi's since I was 19. I take 125 Levo and have been feeling pretty awful this year and am researching more about optimum treatment in the hope that it will relieve some of my symptoms. My dr has just ticked my b12 as normal and says that my levels are all fine.

Read the above link and you will know more than your Doc. Anything below 500 and you could suffer neurological conditions. eg - where did I leave my keys ? - being just the beginning :-)

Oh fantastic thank you. I have quite a few of neurological symptoms so think this could be part of the problem. Just hope I can convince my gp to give me injections. I assume you can get the privately otherwise.

You can order them yourself on-line - pop over to the PAS forum and ask the question - where do you buy and ask for replies by PM. I live in Crete so I buy OTC.... Am sure you know someone who will do them for you. You will also need a good B Complex to keep all the B's in balance.

Convincing GP's could be tough ! Have you read Martyn Hoopers book - Pernicious Anaemia The Forgotten Illness and B12 Deficiency. It's a must read. He is chairman of the PAS and does sterling work to raise awareness at high levels. He spoke at the Thyroid UK Conference last year. Great guy...

Remember that only 20% of the serum B12 result is available at a cellular level where it is needed - so the test really is just a guide. Hence high levels are required. You cannot overdose as it is water soluble !

Hypo and B12D symptoms do overlap in many cases.....

Vic, you're not likely to get injections with B12 377. I was going to suggest you supplement 1,000mcg methylcobalamin sublingual lozenges spray or patches but as you have neuropathy start at 5.000mcg for 8 weeks to boost levels and then reduce to 1,000mcg. f you feel better at the higher dose you can continue it as you can't overdose on B12, excess is excreted in urine. Take a B Complex vitamin to keep the other B vits balanced.

Antibodies are negative for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) as a cause of your hypothyroidism.

Thanks clutter. I will look into buying those. Also recently started on Vit d and iron due to low values. I was diagnosed with hashi's when I was 19 as my antibodies were in the thousands. Can antibodies improve or should they still be showing high if it is hashi's. I'm confused now. Thanks

Vic, antibodies can subside, often due to Levothyroxine or other replacement lowering TSH and reducing thyroid activity and often due to removing the irritation cause by gluten when a 100% gluten-free diet is adopted.

Some people never develop antibodies but an ultrasound scan will show thyroid damage consistent with Hashi's.

Make sure you take Levothyroxine 4 hours away from iron and vitamin D.

Thank you clutter. It's good to know that my antibodies aren't raging at least. I am debating whether to go and see a specialist to make all these changes as it makes me nervous doing it alone. Did you visit a specialist at all or are you self taught? Having latest bloods done on Wednesday and will decide after that. Just hope I can get to some normality soon. If all else fails then maybe it will be antidepressants!

Melly, I do see an endo but he was as useful as a chocolate fireguard when I needed help. I experimented until I fixed myself. He's probably crediting himself though!

Endos & GPs aren't big on nutrition so when your vitamin and mineral levels are within range they're 'normal'. 'Optimal' will usually feel a lot better than normal. Try it and see for yourself. It will take 6-8 weeks to feel improvement after supplementing. Low vitD and B12 can cause low mood. You may not feel the need for antidepressants once your levels are good.

Post your new results and ranges in a new question and members will advise.
