Hypothyrodism = low stomach acid = poor absorption of b12
Vitamin d is synthesised from cholesterol. Hypothyroidism often = high cholesterol. Maybe we hang on to it and so it can't be used to make the vit d?

B12 is a hormone rather than a vitamin and Vit D is a pro-hormone. We are usually deficient in either for the reasons Galathea gives.
A very low B12 could mean that the person might have pernicious anaemia (another life-long treatment) and low B12 and Vit D can cause pain and discomfort. Both are essential as well as the minerals, ferritin, folate and iron which your GP should also have checked.
If you Google intrinsic factor, this is what auto immune thyroid folk often loose, this leads to a lack of b12 absorption . Vitamin d seems to be low in most people if they were all tested, but we need it in abundance for variety off functions. B12 and folate are vitamins,, folate is b9 . They are water soluble so needed on daily basis as body can't store them unlike vit d which is fat soluble, truth be told I think most of us end up on supplements ,,esp vitamin d and b12 ,, they all seem to aid in thyroxine conversion,,
