Switching from Levo to NDT

Hi all I'm making the switch but something I'm a little unsure of. I'm on Levo 100 mcg and t3 15mcg . So I was gonna start with 1 grain and lower t3 by 10. But in part 3 STTM DOC it says lower t3 again I'm only gonna be on 5 so do you think I should cut it out totally and hold 1-2 weeks then do same again... Xx

Lorr67, 100mcg T4 + 15mcg T3 is bioactively equivalent to 1.5 grains to 2 grains of NDT. You can switch straight over to 1.5 grains and increase to 2 grains after 2 weeks if you need to.

Oh so I don't need to top up with t3 ? I can't wait to get started.

Lorr, the STTM advice is for people switching from T3 only to NDT. You can switch straight over as you don't need to build up T4.

There is 13.5mcg T3 in 1.5 grain NDT so you probably won't need more T3.

Personally I dropped ALL levo for 2 weeks before I started NDT. Levo stays in the system for at least 7 weeks. If you do not convert T4 to T3 readily then levo is of no use to you! Dunno about T3.

So, should I not start decreasing Levo and increasing NDT (Thiroyd) step by step - I thought this was supposed to be the best way to do it? I take 75mcg of Levo only at the moment, and want to start Thiroyd..

Clarabelle, 75mcg Levothyroxine is roughly equivalent to 1 grain (60-65mg) Thiroyd so you can switch straight over to 1 tablet Thiroyd. If you need to increase Thiroyd it is usual to increase in 1/2 grain increments every 2 weeks until you are on 2 grains. Hold at 2 grains for 6 weeks and have a thyroid test, including FT3, before increasing further. If your GP won't do FT3 you can order private thyroid tests from Blue Horizon and Genova via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Thanks Clutter - So I don't need to lower Levo at the same time as increasing Thiroyd? Just switch - will it do any harm if I lower one gradually whilst increasing the other?

Clarabelle, there's no need to do so but it won't cause harm if you do.
