I have started developing eczema on my legs. Never suffered from skin problems before and I am nearly 55 now. Is this another symptom of having an underactive thyroid do you think?

Hi It can be as it is autoimmune. You need cortisone cream from the GP. It may spread mine is all over the body and horrid.

Cortisone cream can be very unsafe. It can alter your own cortisol production and cause many terrible, unsafe issues. Plus, it doesn't address why you have it. If you don't address that, you end up with more autoimmune conditions, possibly, over time. Food issues can cause it and also cause Hashimotos..
Hi Cortisone should be used with care but it is the only thing that helps bad eczema. The cause , like with me, is mostly unknown factors.
Jackie
I guess that you been tested for food allergies and sensitivity tests, since you have an unknown cause..those tests are negative? Cortisone cream is a temporay solution and just is not safe. You would have to find to cause on your own. Doctors like to hand out drugs.
Iv`e had eczma on my thighs every winter for ten years now. Creams don`t seem to help much.
I had terrible eczema around my eyes and on my hands due to inadequate treatment of hypothyroid. It has now gone completely. I use NDT, some T3 and keep my mineral and vitamin levels good. In my experience cortisol creams do not solve the problem they just keep it at bay for a while.
Thanks for all your replies. I have been prescribed skin thinning cream by the GP but won't use it. I'm using coconut oil for now and have been recommended a private thyroid consultant so will see what he says. I'm sure once I sort out my meds (I've reached a plateau with my T3) it will go away again. x
Are you on statins?
Stay away from hydrocortisone cream..you know it will effect your own cortisol levels and can be very dangerous over all. It can be caused by food sensitivities and food allergies too. My daughter has it and does not have hashi's. Foof sensitivities and allergies can be the cause or a fctor in the development of Hashimotos as well. Worth looking into.
My GP prescribed Dermol lotion to wash with, instead of soap. It helps because the skin gets too dry otherwise. She also gave me another more gentle cream to put on the excema, but I can't remember what that was called. Both creams made a big difference, I also use Balneum Plus bath oil, but you have to be very careful with that as it makes the bath extra slippery.
Good luck with getting it cleared up. MariLiz
I had really dry flaky skin all over, horrible, got on my clothes and itched like mad. I went gluten free and have normal skin now
I get red patches just above my ankles these days. The docs call it varicose eczema, but I can relate each patch to a previous bruise and there is thickening under the skin. I think that these bruises take months to heal as the circulation is poor in that part of the leg. I massage the cream in to help the circulation.
That's where my eczema is as well. I'm using coconut oil and it helps a little
i have ezema in eyes, arms, face -it on legs and worse normaly sphyosis, you need aqueus cream soap. 2.50 ant cemist big tub last ages. use it as a daily cream, night cream, soap. its not sented and you can use as mutch as you want and dont stan clothes. antihistamine pill - takes itch out. ive had ezema since a baby. balenedum oil for bath is great!! can get both on prescription.
omg... I have severe eczema due to allergies due to certain chemicals and its soooooo itchy, the rashes that develop when i accidentally touch the substances I am allergic to. Foderma serum instantly makes me feel better. This is the best creme I have ever tried and would recommend it to any one who has frustrating itch, especially due to eczema. Best thing I have ever found!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try it and see.
