I and my daughter have underactive thyroids. My son has adult ADD. I read somewhere that ADD and thyroid disease can sometimes be linked . He has had his thyroid tested in the past and came back normal. He is very underweight . Does anyone out there know of anyone with similar problems?

Yes I too have read that.... Maybe you could obtain his blood test results and post here for people to comment. Don't forget the ranges !

I think when people are over-active it is more difficult to concentrate...and under-active....

How are his levels of Iron - Ferritin - Folate - B12 and VitD ? All need to be OPTIMAl in their various ranges.....

The hyper phase of Hashimoto's would lead to similar symptoms, wouldn't it? Bipolar disorder and Hashimoto's have been confused before. I agree it would be worth getting his blood results and seeing whether he'd ever been tested for antibodies.

Hi. Are you in the USA? When you write ADD, do you mean Attention Deficit Disorder inattentive? I have a son with Asperger's who also has all the symptoms of ADD inattentive. My son's weight was also very low at one point. I also had his thyroid fully tested (privately) including antibodies and it came back almost clear - Free T3 was raised over the range though, but only slightly - despite his having many symptoms which were very close to those of hyperthyroidism (slight tremor, anxiety and palpitations). I believe now that this was due to his low iron level. My son is now 17.

If you would like to message me we could discuss all this one to one because (a) I will bore everyone to death otherwise, and also, discussing my own symptoms in detail is one thing, but maybe with our children it's better to do it privately in case they get cross!

Dr Natasha Campbell McBride has written a book Gut and Psychology, obtained from Amazon, she specialises in gut health, I fully recommend you read this eye opening tome. It covers all your son's problems and has solutions to heal the gut and promote homeostasis of good health. She recommends the GAP diet for healing the gut and information can be found on her website and the internet. It is not a quick fix and needs a strong intention but well worth it in the long run. She firmly states she healed her son's autism in this way. Even if the dietry regime seems daunting there is much to learn from this special highly intelligent person.
