I have two large bottles of Epsom salts mixed with sea salt and essential oils by the bath. One a mix of warming oils the other citrus. I always feel wonderful after a warm soak in a bath using one of these.

Ooh, now that's a thought. What oils do you use and how do you soak the Sea and Epsom salts in them? Do you need to use a lot of oils?

I can't claim to be the inventor of this - I got the idea from 'A green guide to natural beauty' by Karen Gilbert. And I tend to be a bit gung-ho 'fling-it' with any recipe so I don't always follow them exactly. Her recipe uses green clay and Dead Sea Salt; I omit the former and substitute ordinary coarse sea salt for the latter. Using about 450 grams of dry ingredients she recommends 100 drops of oil - I make mine up in smaller amounts. For warming I have used cinnamon and ginger with a tiny touch of black pepper oil, and for citrus grapefruit, lemon and lime oils. The oils are ground into about 60 grams of bicarbonate of soda using a mortar and pestle, then just added to the other ingredients and mixed well.

There are dangers in the use of some oils, but there are good books and good online sources to check out.

I remember making Bath Salts at school like this many years ago. Think we used colouring as well. Thanks for the memory.

i had just read an article saying that their is no scientific proof that Epsom salts do much and do not raise magnesium levels, according to tests and studies.

Well, you know what those so-called scientific tests are like. They prove what they want them to prove. There's an awful lot more out there saying that it does work. I can't personally say one way or the other, because I've never managed to get my magnesium tested.

& some of the drugs that deplete magnesium.... (Suzy Cohen USA)

Yup, we must all be very short of magnesium. The irony, though, the osteoporosis drug Raloxifene depletes magnesium, but if you have osteoporosis, you need more magnesium, not less!

Colleague's mum in hospital since last week (& for 2 weeks before) - can't walk (has PA injections 3 montly - doesn't eat, feels sick)

on PPIs for HH/Barratts since years - now low magnesium.... (for one)

Colleague's horse (not a comparison just an observation) dare I?

bloodtests, heart murmur - magnesium - scanned & sorted within a few days!

I am going to the vet next time.... and I will enjoy saying nothing! x

Yes, it's incredible, isn't it. Unfortunately, vet care in France seems to be going down-hill rapidly!

Our vet's as deaf as a post. I asked him how many teeth a dog has. He said oh, about 14 years. And that was wrong on all counts...
