Now where do I go?

I have been feeling unwell for a long time now and keep asking my doctor if my thyroid is ok. I gave gained about three stone p, feel fuzzy headed and feel miserable. I have had blood tests and he says it is fine. my free t3 he tells me is 19? He tells me I am depressed and there is nothing he can do. Where do I go from here?

Are you sure about that free T3 figure? Do you know the reference range? Seems odd to me. Maybe he meant T4?

Nope I'm sure that is what he said? He was very reluctant to tell me and kept asking if I knew anything about thyroid levels.

Hmm. Does he know anything about thyroid levels? If I were you I would ask for a full thyroid function test to include free T4, free T3 and TSH. Then you will know what is going on. You could have them done privately if he refuses and post here for advice from members. Do not believe the depression diagnosis. It is all they ever come up with when they know little about thyroid.

You might also ask him to check your serum iron, ferritin, Vit D, B12 and folate. These are likely to be low in range and give you unpleasant symptoms too. Do ask for reference ranges for all tests, as labs vary.

Get a print-out of your latest blood tests from the surgery (we are entitled to them) and post for comments. At least then you will know exactly what he asked for. TSH and T4 aren't sufficient and they may even be 'out'. Make sure reference ranges are there (they are figures in brackets). We ask for these as labs differ all over the country.

What made you ask for a thyroid test? Just wondering if you have family members with the same problem. your GP sounds as though he hasn't much of a clue-not unusual sadly. I agree with what has already been said but I was thinking that if you have family members living in the same area as you who can recommend their GP changing GP may be a good option if all else fails.
