Hi Everyone..I am new to the site only joined last week.

Centralparklady, the beta blockers will help with heart racing and palpitations but you are very hyperthyroid and your GP should start you on antithyroid drugs, usually Carbimazole, to regulate your thyroid hormone production while you are waiting to see your endocrinologist. If GP isn't sure how much to prescribe s/he should contact the endo for advice.

Hi Clutter

I was on carbimazole for 2 weeks but had a lot of bad side effects. I have been on propylthiouracil for a week.

Not sleeping very well as heart racing at night, got to have a heart trace tomorrow.

You are very hyperactive, having been there myself I can imagine how awful you are feeling, it is quite frightening.

Some people here are started on Carbimazole along with beta blockers to stop the pounding heart. When I was first diagnosed if I hadn't been asthmatic that was what I would have been given alongside the Carbimazole but because of the asthma the beta blockers were out.

I was given amitryptiline at one point, it was a few weeks after they added in the thyroxine alongside the Carbimazole and I was actually needing an increase and the palpitations started again. My GP didn't want to give me an increase in thyroxine so she gave me the amitryptiline instead. It did work to a certain extent but I only took them long enough to stop the palps and when I saw the endo she increased the thyroxine. Next time I needed an increase I put my case to my GP who increased the thyroxine herself.

Can your doctor not get your endo appointment brought forward for you? I waited three months to see an endo and to be honest the carb didn't really stop the palps completely. Hopefully your heart trace will be ok tomorrow.

It's very scary when your heart pounds like that. I remember I could feel my pulse by putting my hand on my abdomen I was convinced I had some sort of an aneurism. It wasn't and eventually everything calmed down, it's hard to believe when you feel as awful as you are feeling but once they get your treatment sorted out you will feel a lot better.

Hi F&N

I appreciate you emailing me, and I will take on board what you are saying.

I have seen my endo 3 weeks ago and he put me on Carbimazole, which I took for 2 weeks, but had bad side affects. I have been taking propylthiouracil for a week with beta blockers.

Hoping things start to calm down soon. As I hate going to bed with these dreadful palpitations.

Will let you know how things go with my tests this week. Glad you understand, and have been able to give me some good advice.

Bye for now.

CentralParkLady, it probably takes more than a week for PTU to bring down levels. Ask for another thyroid blood test in 3/4 weeks in time for your endo consultation.

I hope the heart trace is ok.

Yes will do, I am having a scan for a nodule on my thyroid this Friday. Feel I am being well looked after.

Just need for the meds to kick in.

Will keep you informed.

Thanks for your help...very much appreciated.

If you are being well looked after, then you are a minority!

Hi Clutter

Health has been poor this week, with lack of sleep because of palpitations, its driving me mad. Have had a heart trace and a scan today. Heart trace ok, but scan showed up a 3cm nodule which they have had to take some fluid out of to test.

Not feeling great, seem to be very anxious with all these tests going on.

I feel cursed, have had arthritis for 20yrs now this. I feel as though my life is just hospitals, doctors and medications. Have felt like a guinea pig for years, with all different medications for my arthritis, I hope I am going to have the strength to get through this.

But I have to remain positive, and hope for good news with my scan.

It feels good to tell you how I feel, as everyone on this site, is in the same boat(so to speak) we all have issues with our thyroid health.

Reading about other members health, makes you realise you are not alone, and we all have the same goals, to aim for...a clean bill of health.

Bye for now

Brenda

Brenda, Having lots of tests is tiring and makes you feel very anxious. Good news about the heart trace though. I hope the fine needle aspiration result is benign. Do they suspect it is a 'hot' nodule causing your hyperthyroidism?

Hi Clutter

I have not been told what is the cause yet, will let you know when I get the results.

You may have a Hot Nodule causing this Hyper issue. Once it's gone, you will feel much better! Please let us know the results! Very treatable.

What is a hot nodule?

faith63 profile image

I can't find your reply. A hot nodule is one that produces or makes the thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormone.

Thanks Faith

I got a few books from my library this afternoon, to get some information about thyroid health.

With only being diagnosed 4 weeks ago, there is a lot I need to learn.

I really would not rely on standard medical ideas about it. Once your nodule is gone, you may not need any meds either. You could be very very lucky. Those like me, with an Autoimmune disease seem to have more problems and standard medicine only offers t4 meds, when there are a few different types of medsavailable
