What is likeliest cause of hadhimotos - hereditary or did the years of stress and worry I put myself through over work and family issues cause it? I know it seems self-abuse to ask but I must know.
Is it correct that now I have it, I must avoid stress at all costs - to the extent of changing jobs or even leaving full time work?

Adam, autoimmune disease can be genetic but the same disease isn't necessarily passed on ie my mother and sister had Graves but I had Hashimoto's. Hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid disease can be triggered by hormonal changes in men and women, by trauma, stress, bereavement, whiplash injury, a virus, other illness, some medications and a whole bunch of other stuff.
I've not heard that Hashi patients have to avoid stress or leave full time work. Some hypothyroid/Hashi people may find they are less able to cope well with stressful situations and others may have such overwhelming symptoms and fatigue they are unable to continue working. Once optimally medicated and stable most hypothyroid patients continue to live normal and productive lives.
Hi Adam, I totally back what clutter has posted. By far the majority of people with thyroid problems do just fine once meds are prescribed and they are on suitable dosage, which hopefully for you won't be too long.
Possible causes and connections include stress, mercury fillings, toxins, gluten, fluoride.
All my sisters have some sort of thyroid problem but not exactly the same ones, as did my mother and one of her sisters and my grandmother so there must be a hereditary aspect to it in our case.
I probably have hashimotos I was just told it was autoimmune thyroiditis. I had odd symptoms of autoimmune disorder from my 20's onwards. I cannot cope with too much stress - but you can't avoid it altogether, only dead people do that! I have had to make changes in my life to allow me to cope, eg. going part time for work. I do most of what I did before but I am deffo not as well now. I became overtly hypothyroid prior to being treated, hopefully you have got treatment long before that stage, so ought to do better than me. Once the medication is right you should feel good again.
Each person varies but there is a lot you can do to help yourself reach optimal health. My mother felt and eldest sister feels as good as they did before getting thyroid cancer and it appeared/s to have had little or no effect on their quality of life.
There is great advice to be had here at ThyroidUK to help you recover and regain your equilibrium.
Hi Adam, It appears there are several causes. One thing very prominent now is leaky gut and that sets the immune system into attack mode. The target can depend on individual weaknesses. The thyroid gland seems a common target. Stress will definitely cause leaky gut but antibiotics and sugar are often culprits. There are relaxation techniques you should look into.
