Test results help.....

Hello

Could somebody help me understand the following results. I'm currently on 50mg of levothyroxine. My GP has said these are fine but I still feel tired, cold, struggle with heartburn etc...

TSH 2.24 (0.35-4.00)

T4 14.5 (9.0-26.0)

Ferritin 80ug (10-150)

B12 576ng (191-663)

Folate 9.6ug (4.6-18.7)

Vitamin D 54nmol/L

My red blood cell count also came back marked 'low' on the lab report yet the GP says it's normal. 4.01 (4.10-5.10)

I had tests done in Oct and my TSH 2.43 and T4 15.1, I've been on levothyroxine 50mg since August with no dose changes since I started taking it. I've also just had a coeliac screen that came back ok and TPO antibodies were 7 in Oct.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I'd like to try for a baby soon and want to make sure I'm as healthy as I can be!

For pregnancy you need to be in good health, particular thyroid good health as it is most important and this is a very good link:

As you are still not feeling too well and your TSH has barely changed, and you are not pregnant I would ask the GP for an increase of 25mcg levo as usually 50mcg is a starting dose but some GPs think it is o.k. for us to be within the normal range.

Before trying to get pregnant, you should read the NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries on the subject of hypothyroidism.

I agree your TSH is too high and your FT4 is too low but others look very good.

T4 normal levels are...(12-22)

Tsh....(0.2-4.2)

your t4 is 15.1, so it's in the normal range, and no need to stress.

I would stay on the dosage you are on for another 6 weeks, then get another blood test.

If the T4 has dropped below 12, then perhaps increase your thyroxine by half a tablet a day for another 6weeks, then another blood test.

It is also important for expectant Mums to have GOOD levels of D to ensure the health of a newborn and its on going health.

B12 could be higher. It's best right up at the top of the range (and that's a very low top of the range!) Don't worry about over-dosing because the B vits are water-soluable and you just excrete any surplus. If you decide to supplement - which I would recommend - get sublingual methylcobalamin plus a good B complex.
