For those who have had Total thyroidectomy and take Armour

Hi,

I'm just curious, what dose are you on if you've had a TT and take Armour? If it's your stable dose what is your free T4 and T3 ? And Tsh too?

Thanks

I believe if you are on NDT the blood tests don't matter too much as they were produced for the use of levothyroxine alone. That's my personal view. Before the blood tests came in with levo as the (doctors') only choice we gradually we were medicated with NDT until we felt well and no blood tests were ever taken. It was more a matter of how our metabolism reacted to the medication and our wellbeing.

Hi Shaws,

Thanks for your quick response! When you went up a dose on NDT how long did it take to figure out if it was correct or not? When you say you gradually went up a dose how much was the increase and over what time period?

I forgot to say I didn't have a TT but I believe people who have should also have T3 added to T4 at the very least but best is NDT.

I had been on NDT but GP wouldn't prescribe but has done for T3 which I am well on. When I was on NDT (got my own) I switched immediately to 1gr (which is equal approx. to 100 levo I was on) and after a few weeks when I felt I could do with a little more I increased by 1/4 gr and increased again about 6 weeks later. This is a link and some of the questions/answers may be helpful.

Go to the date August 22, 2005 and November 21, 2003 on the following link which is self-explanatory:-

Ok, thanks for the info and the links. Very useful.

Hopefully someone who had a TT and is on Armour will reply, as I am interested in what dosages they are taking and how long it took for them to get to that dose.

Did you feel better on NDT or t3?

Is it not the 'effect' of T3 in NDT which makes it equivalent to 100mcg levo - T3 being more 'active'?

Wow that's a huge dose!! Is he optimal on it? I also had a TT for graves but my dose will be lower than that I hope!

It is the "effect" of the T3 in 1 gr NDT and 25mcg T3 which make both the equivalent of 100mcg levothyroxine.
