Well they have finally decided that this old bird has been through enough and the meds just are not working..They are taking me into have the old troublesome gland removed..What happens afterwards does the Hashimotos go or does it still hang on??

Hashimotos and total Thyroidectomy
Hi loopy
How long have you been on Thyroid medication, and why do they suggest a TT? breathing difficulties, nodules? Have you had a scan and/or FNA?
I had a partial T - if I'd had a choice I would have given medication a good try first in preference to an op (mine was due to a single dodgy nodule - just my thoughts).
I don't know whether it would still be Hashimotos afterwards sorry, (would antibodies just go??) but without a thyroid you would need total Thyroid hormone replacement meds.
What were you latest test results? Jane
Of course I should say we're not medically qualified here, any suggestions cannot replace your doctors advice, - just wondering what the reason is.
(I have felt better after my op - less hyper symptoms, but hypo) J x
loopy, have you had your adrenals tested? If they are fatigued then the meds won't work. And they still won't work after the op if that is the problem. My personal opinion is that you should insist on a cortisol test before agreeing to the op.
Hugs, Grey
I have been on meds for over a year and they keep increasing the dose and nothing. I have been tested for andrenals and nothing, cushings disease etc. I have a large goitre that is growning rapidly and causing breathing problems..they have said the meds just are not working..radi is not a option because of the swelling. Surgery is the next step.
You don't have to have Cushings or Adisons to have a problem with adrenals, there are stages in between at which the adrenals aren't working at their best and a little help can work wonders. That's the problem with doctors, it's all or nothing. They don't have any shades of grey! lol
I think its more on the fact that the goitre is now causing me problems but obviously the meds clearly are not working..I really needed to know what happens to the Hashimotos after the gland has been removed..does it attack other endocrine areas or disappear..
Hi,i have hashimotos ,was diagnosed 15 years ago ,i have a goitre which i had a scan done on at that time aswell,on throxine 100mg,been reading alot about the condition and it keeps saying to get your iodine levels checked ,once there at the correct level this can reduce your goitre, also it says adrenals need to be checked, cortisol, blood test to check for antibodies, vitamin d test which i was low in,
I have had all of the above done Connor10 and basically I am at the end of the road and surgery is the only option..I have had storms etc and it is causing so many other health problems..Hemilplegic migraines etc..My Endo is very very good and I also had another consultant in with us and they both agreed its the best way forward for me..I have a appointment with the cardio unit this week..and then await surgery
