Hair loss

I have been taking a compound for thyroid of 60 mg for a couple years now and due to my shipments from Canada not coming in time i decided to quit taking altogether. Well it's been three weeks and my hair is falling out. Will this level out eventually? Does anyone know? I sure hope so.

Debber, undermedication and overmedication both cause hair loss. It won't balance out if you are underactive and stop taking thyroid replacement. I suggest you chase up your consignment and start taking your meds as soon as possible. Long term undermedication can cause considerable adverse health injury apart from hair loss and you're likely to start feeling very unwell and fatigued soon.

Thank you Clutter. They never deliver on time and I get tired of chasing them down. My hair is very long but it looks like I'm going to chop it due to all of this. The damage is done already so don't matter now. But I thank you for caring to write me.

Debber, There is a real risk of heart damage &/or osteoporosis if you don't take thyroid hormone when you are hypothyroid. Hair will recover within a couple of months of your thyroid levels becoming normal.

Try ordering when you are down to 4/6 weeks of NDT so you can ride out delivery delays or find a more reliable supplier.

Okay Clutter I will get it ordered and see what I can do. I'm so frustrated. I didn't know about heart and osteo. I've gotten to point I put it in gods hands as its all so complexing. My body is on a roller coaster and my life is at the hands of people who can't get my shipments to me and so tired of it. V

Just a little point - God uses our hands! Listen to the advice on here - and use it. Good luck and God bless.

Dear Debber,

I'm sorry to hear about your hair-loss, it must be upsetting.

Can you help me? I have just been diagnosed with low thyroid, and am really struggling with levothyroxine, which is causing nasty side-effects (rare, I think?)

How do you get your NDT from Canada? Can you be very kind and post me the details? I would greatly appreciate it.

Good luck with your hair,

Hornby, Members can't post details of where to obtain UK prescription meds on the forum but they can send the info in a private message.

You've only been taking Levothyroxine for 2 weeks. It will barely have had a chance to start working as it takes 7/10 days to be absorbed. Any worsening of symptoms is very likely to be a worsening of your hypothyroid symptoms rather than any allergy to 25mcg Levothyroxine which is so small it's unlikely to either help or cause problems.

It would be better to wait until you are optimally dosed on Levothyroxine for a few months before changing to NDT and seeing whether that is an improvement. Unfortunately, correcting low thyroid hormone due to hypothyroidism is a slow business. Your GP should retest your thyroid levels 4/6 weeks after you started Levothyroxine as you will almost certainly require a dose increase. Don't take your Levothyroxine on the day of your blood test until after your blood draw. Ask for a printout of your results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results) and post them in a new question for members to advise/comment.

My email address is <Admin deleted>. But clutter is right, give it a chance. Everything is going to be okay. I really don't know why we are made up like this. I share your frustration and struggle. You take care of yourself.

Thank you Clutter, I didnt think about that. To give you an update I called the place again to order my med and they said it would take a month and a half to receive. I will be calling my doc tomoro to see if I can find other place. They said they sent shipment in Oct but I never received it and paid for it. They gave me a complaint address by way of email to send and I'll be doing that. It doesn't change the fact that my hair is knotting and falling. I guess if this the worse that happens me in life i got it made. Its been knotting and It feels different. Thank you Clutter for your support and I will keep you posted.

You don't have to go abroad for NDT... One form is available...Thyroid-S...from various online suppliers. I'm taking Armour but have a bottle of Thyroid-s as a backup in case of shipping problems.

Hiya Clutter

Just to give you an update. I called my doc and she called some stuff in at drug store that said is good and they had to order it. I go pick it up tomorrow. She said I wasn't the only one this happened too. I don't know if I'll be able to save some of my hair as it's still coming out but i will see if I can balance out soon. I can't believe that this has happened. My hair was very long and thick and I'm so sad over this happening. I know it's just hair but it's a change I'm not use to. I didn't even have hair fall like the from my thyroid issue before using the grains. Thank you for listening to me and caring and getting thru to me as I was just going to let it go. I hope when I start taking the med tomorrow that it will ease it up. My head is even sore.

Debber, I'm glad your doctor has sorted out some thyroid hormone for you. It will probably take a few weeks for the thyroid hormone to start working before your hair stops shedding so don't expect too much too soon.

It's really sad this happened. This was all due to no control of my own. It says shedding will occur for a couple of months temporarily. I'm really considering going and getting it as short as I can with all of this. I'm truly devastated over all this.

Debbers, it will improve but you will need to be patient. Trimming off split/tangled ends will improve your hair. You probably won't need to have it cut short. See what your hairdresser advises.

I'm wondering if I should wait to take new med until my body gets past this jolt. Im afraid if I start taking new med that it will throw it even more out of whack.

Do you have what I have also? I had no idea that this would happen. I really tried to get my shipments and I even had extra. It's truly maddening all of this Clutter. My breast cancer was the start of all this when I was 35, 7 years ago. Bc doesn't even run in my family and then one day I'm told if I don't have treatment you have ten months. And now I deal with thyroid stuff that I never had hefore. I had to go thru chemo. I feel like im going thru it again with my hair.

Not what you're looking for?
