Feeling better, then worse

Hi,

I was diagnosed borderline hypothyroid 7 weeks ago. Have been taking 50mcg Levothyroxine. I felt amazing for a few days- wide awake, warm with a return of sex drive that I haven't had for years. Then it slowly petered out and now I'm back at square one, freezing cold, falling asleep etc etc. I had my bloods done last week and will get the results this week and I'm trying to inform myself of what's going on.

Can anyone explain why I felt so much better then it stopped? My TSH was 4.7 and the upper end of the range was 4.2.

Thank you.

Meds456, your body was initially grateful for the thyroid hormone and responded positively but is now telling you it wasn't enough and needs more. 50mcg is a small starter dose and your blood test will probably confirm that you need a dose increase. TSH just above or below 1.0 is usually comfortable for most on Levothyroxine.

Make sure you take your Levothyroxine on an empty stomach, 1 hour before, or two hours after food and drink, 2 hours away from supplements and other medication and 4 hours away from vitamin D, iron, calcium and oestrogen.

Thank you so much for your answer. I've been hypo for years (I can see it now, looking back). It feels like a relief to know what is wrong, but I can also see that I'm up for a fight with the establishment going forward. I think if my bloods come back into the normal range at my appointment this week that my GP will refuse to up the meds. I'm trying to educate myself as thoroughly as possible so that I can fight my corner.

Thanks again for your response.

Meds, they should come into normal range, but optimal is low in the range. Read this link thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org.uk if you want a copy of the article to show your GP.
