Whilst I am finding the responses to my enquiries really useful I have a further question relating to the blood tests. I know they test TSH and T4 but there is also mention of a T3 test which isn't shown on my last 3 results. Should this be done automatically during the usual blood test or does this have to be requested and done separately?

Thyroid Blood tests
Alexara, There is an assumption, erroneous in my view, that FT4 within range means that adequate conversion to T3 will be happening. Even if a GP requests a FT3 test the lab may decline to test it when TSH isn't suppressed <0.03.
You can order private thyroid tests from Blue Horizon and Genova via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...
My July test showed TSH 0.03 and throxine dose increased to 100mcg. Although November was 0.06 but my symptoms still persist so could I ask for this test in any event?
Alexara, yes, ask your GP and if s/he agrees suggest they write a note on the bloods request to the lab saying FT3 must be done.
Ask your GP to test ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate as hypothyroid patients are often deficient/low and these deficiencies can cause musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and low mood similar to hypothyroid symptoms. Post your results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results) in a new question and members will advise whether supplementation is required.
