Based on my experience of NHS and how they "do not Treat" thyroid patients, I didn't even bother asking for a selenium test! They would probably have wondered why I would want to know. The fact that Selenium and Iodine are important for the healthy function of the thyroid is an irrelevance to most medics! But I did pay for the test privately, I used Genova, I think, they do a whole range of mineral tests, such as zinc, calcium, magnesium. I appreciate not everyone can afford to have private tests, but I also had a private urine test for Iodine and found my level was through the floor at 20 (should be between 150-200)

PM me if you want more precise info.

You can get selenium form brazil nuts, which I did eat but now I have a daily pill (from online supplier)

Hi crimple

you are wright about the nhs, I was told by three gp that i did not need a selinum test as they have not come across any one who need it what a great reply from the medical profession, did you go back and show to your gp the private blood test results?

No point whatsoever going back to GP. I even paid for a private scan of my thyroid because it was quite uncomfortable at one point, that seems to have subsided quite a bit after GF and lacto free diet! The scan showed my thyroid was very atrophied (Shrunken) in other words worn out I think for lack of proper nutrients! I shall see how I get on with my Iodine therapy, see earlier post where I replied to Iodine query.

I hope that once I have done that I will be much better. I will then write up my treatment regime and send it to my GP. Doubt it will make any impact but I might ask for it to be attached to my notes. I am "done" with medics telling me what I do or do not need. I have taken the DIY approach to my health and it has made a big difference so far. I wouldn't have managed without thyroid UK. I have learned so much since I joined this site 18 months ago, everyone has been so helpful. You know that there is always someone who will reply to you and give helpful advice. Do hope you make some progress with your issues.

Hashimotos patients should take 200mgs per day, it lowers antibody levels, you can't overdose so no testing required.

Faith, too much selenium is not good. 100mcg or 3 Brazil nuts daily is probably sufficient.

I'm sure it's not. I was told to take 200mcgs, i guess it was not milligrams. Has never done me any good as far as i can tell.
