Are there any success stories for anyone suffering from an hypothyroidism?

I began my levo in March but started loosing more than normal amount of hair since July and my hair is thinning too. I know the GP will say it's stress but i've not been stressed about anything. Any help appreciated too

I lost all my hair as a kid and then later after the birth of my third child. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 12 years ago and although I have many other serious autoimmune conditions and have taken aggressive drugs for these, which have listed hairloss as a side effect, my hair is rich and full and golden/ white and I get loads of compliments for it now at the grand age of 51! I never take it for granted now and I've also lost four stone since my RA began over three years ago so I look better than I've looked in about 25 years even if I don't feel it!

Yes good result for the hair - just the rest of me that's a bit rubbish lol!

I didn't use anything special on my hair at all - even when I was on a chemo drug for RA. All I use is a prescription medicated herbal shampoo a bit like T-Gel as I have very itchy dermatitis on my scalp sometimes. I don't even use a conditioner but when I was little my nan would use a raw egg to wash my hair sometimes for the extra protein and always rinse in cool water for extra shine!

At last my hair loss is slowing down but it's taken more than 6 months of using Nioxin shampoo to achieve this.

My hair (I lost over half my head volume over 5 years) has doubled in thickness over the last 2 years after switching to t3 only - and then 3 months ago I added in some NDT (so now I take NDT and T3). Hair continues to be fine.

Being on the right dose and essentially the right thyroid hormone replacement for you is essential. Levothyroxine was awful for me.I would not take that poison again if someone paid me.

Hi karen, thats great news, where do you get your NDT and T3 from please and is your GP monitoring it. I have been terribly unwell after 30 years on thyroxin and have now gone down the route with Dr. Petefield , am hoping that hairless and feeling unwell will stop but can't seem to get my GP to give me T3 or NDT.

Please help someone

I am going it alone although I do get my T3 on NHS prescription. The NDT I get privately from the internet from Thailand. I have not had any monitoring recently but to be honest the thyroid panel has never reflected my state of health. I know if I am over treated by how I feel...not ideal but hey ho but after 7 years of nonsense its better in my experience to self treat. I am trying to get armour on the NHS....so far without success...

Mine is a long and complicated story....I won't bore you with it but I take LDN and shortly after that went t3 alone (now - 2 years later - have been taking NDT as well for 3 months)...seems to be suiting me

I wouldn't be without LDN but it was challenging for me at first as i went hyperthyroid (a known possible side effect). This meant I had to stop all synthetic T4 and T3 and my tsh was 42 ten days later...

I restarted t4 felt awful and so knew that t4 hadn't been working. I then dosed on t3 alone for 2 years and recently introduced a small dose on NDT which seems to be working (currently I take 3/4 grain of NDT, and 12.5 mcg at 6am, 10 mcg at 13.30 and 10 mcg of t3 at 22.00)

I am sooooo much better but pay for LDN privately and my NDT.

I can get any drug free on prescription apart from those I really need. Oh the insanity of the NHS....

I use Nioxin as well and have even seen some hair returning along my hairline. It did take about 6 months before I started seeing these little tiny hairs sticking up from my scalp that were not there before.

My hair had become very thin and wispy as my hypothyroidism became worse and worse and I ended up wearing wigs as I had so little hair. Eventually I went on to T3 only treatment and it has turned my life around. Whilst I do admit that I am taking large amounts of T3 it really does seem to suite me and I have been able to return to a very active life style, loosing 3 and half stone has also helped! My hair started to grow again when I started the treatment and it is nearly down to my shoulders now, i have lots of new hair growing all the time and I can now style my hair and wear it up occasionally! The wigs have all been given away and my new hair is getting stronger too.

It is really about getting the right treatment for your hypothyroidism, for me its T3.

There is a new shampoo/conditioner that is designed for these type of hair loss due to medication, can't remember the name but I'll ask my daughter and let you know what it's called, my daughter is Training to be a hairdresser And it was demonstrated this week not sure how effective it is though I'll see if she has more info.
