Really confused now

Have been told I am low on Vitamin D when I have a good diet, am out all the time and take 1000mg cod liver oil daily. Could this be due to under medicated thyroid.

You need to expose over 40% of your body to the midday sun for half an hour on a daily basis to obtain optimal D. I don't know how old you are but we process things less efficiently as we age. What was your result and what treatment are you contemplating ?

Every cell in your body has a receptor for VitD - so that is a lot of VitD :-) As I am sure you know VitD is not just a vitamin but a steroidal pre-hormone and is anti-inflammatory. Statins also block the production of D too.

Hubby and I have lived in Crete for over 10 years now - we tested insufficient and both take supplements. We also fall into the mature category :-) We too have an excellent diet - but both have malabsorption issues and auto-immune thyroiditis.

Almost everyone who is not supplementing with vitamin D is deficient. Moreover, as we age we don't absorb it much and if you have any internal inflammation ie coeliac or even gluten intolerance the levels will certainly drop.

I don't think hypothyroid causes low vitamin D, but low vitamin D is associated with lots of illnesses and symptoms.

Many people are deficient in vitamin D as there are not many great dietary sources and it is hard to get enough from the sun unless you live somewhere hot and sunny and sunbathe frequently.

Cod liver oil really doesn't contain that much vitamin D and isn't strong enough to boost levels really.

A pure vitamin D3 supplement is what they recommend to boost levels.
