What tests should I ask for?

Hi there :-)

I was given a hypothyroid diagnosis 4 weeks ago & I've been on Levothyroxine since - 50mg then 100 after 2 weeks plus vitamin D. I am going back for a check up tomorrow, so I just wondered what other tests I should ask for - I'm getting a bit confused with them all now!

I had iron & cortisol tested along with the thyroid & vitamin d last time so extras... B12, ferratin & anything else?

I've no idea how agreeable the doctor will be but it won't hurt to ask eh?!

Thanks

Bagpuss,

TSH, FT4, FT3, Ferritin, B12 and folate. Don't take your Levothyroxine until after your blood test.

The FT3 is to check conversion? Or am I misunderstanding that one?

I bet you get bored of answering the sane questions... Thanks for taking the time, it's so confusing to newbies!

Pawnstarr, FT3 measures your unbound or available T3. T3 is the active hormone which is converted in your liver and other organs from T4. Chances are your GP or the lab won't test it if your TSH is in range.

I don't mind answering the same questions. I won't forget how confusing I found it and how much help I was given :)

Welcome to the forum! Never be afraid to ask questions, we've all been there at some point and often it seems as one query is sorted another comes along. I've often started dialogues with this may seem a stupid question but I don't know the answer etc! When you get your next results please post them with the ranges ( the numbers in brackets). The ranges are important as machines differ from lab to lab. Never assume normal is really normal for you, how you are feeling is very important and nowerdays many doctors fail to take that into consideration. It can be a slow process getting to your optimum dose because of the time you need to stabilise on it before it can be retested but plenty of help around each step of the way. hope it goes well
