Well the last couple of days and it's been on and off for 2 years now. I crave sweet things. I feel really strange and shaky. But once I have a bit of chocolate I feel ok. Hope not diabetic now to add to this long list of mine. I will be writing something positive one day x

Hi I've been feeling like that and it is a bit strange as i usually crave salty things, I did a bit of research and found that I might be lacking Chromium and a few other things but can't remember now :)

Do you use unrefined sea salt in your cooking as it contains over 80 mineral.

This link is not to purchase the book which Dr Brown has written but the title gives you an idea as well as some of the comments.

Just looked at this link. Very interesting indeed and makes a lot of sense especially I hardly ever salt food. I very occasionally add salt and nobody ever asks for salt to put on their food so it must taste ok.

As a child I used to have arguments at home because my mother made food too salty for me - usually soups.

In fact in her later years I have known her even to add salt to a curry. She used to salt food to within an inch of its life. I'm sure she did it to annoy my ultra health conscious brother and his wife but she a.ways ate it quite happily. I know your taste buds change as you get older but even then ...

I thought every body added salt to curry! lol When they're cooking it, anyway.

Salt is very important. I've posted a couple of links on here lately. It's a myth that salt is bad for you.

Not me - not sure how much my other half uses when he makes them. I don't salt veg as a rule apart from salting aubergines before I cook them etc and only a minimum for everything else nothing to do with being bad for you I just don't like things to taste too salty. Must have been terrible - a mother who loves salty foods and a daughter who hates it. If I get cramp a lot I use it as an excuse to have a packet of salty crisps. The ones with the little bag of salt are my favs.

greygoose in reply toFruitandnutcase

Didn't know they still did those. Are they Smith's? They used to have a little bag of salt.

Well, I don't know about you, but my veg doesn't taste salty, just tastes nice because I don't put enough salt in to make them TASTE salty, it's just that salt enhances the natural taste of food. As well as being necessary for good health!

You need salt!

Ha, ha, I've just put on some potatoes and thinking of you I actually got out the bag of salt I bought in France last summer and used it :-)

We actually have loads if it in the house - I have Fleurs de Sel which is top notch stuff, I even brought some home for my friends, I have the pink Himalayan salt that Marz was talking about the other day and have a big bag of regular salt I bought when we went to visit a salt workers place on the west coast of France - plus a tub of Lo Salt I only really ever put it in soup which is totally tasteless without it. I tend to use pepper or herbs, oregano being my favourite.

Yes I think it is Smiths Crisps. You don't always see them you have to look for them. I haven't had them for a while so they might not be available no. Unfortunately you don't get the cute little twist of salt you used to get when I was growing up, it comes in a little square sachet. I usually buy those big crunchy hand cut crisps - not sure what brand they are but they are good and show me a can of Pringles and there's no stopping me.

greygoose in reply toFruitandnutcase

You've got some good salt there - now use it! lol

Of course you don't still get the little twist of blue paper that I love so much. They just have to change everything whether it needs changing or not! I can't eat the hand cut crisps, they're too hard for my poor old teeth! And Pringles I wouldn't touch with a barge pole! They're not real food! And besides, they don't taste very good...

Ha, ha could taste it on the potato skins tonight.

Yes indeed you do have to watch your fillings with hand cut crisps. :-)

Just reading with interest about salt.I have been told to go on a low salt diet as I have sevete fluid retention .I also sweat excessively so in my way of thinking I need the salt,.All my life I have craved salt and even as a teenager I carcarried salt around to have a dip! Any thoughts! Thankyou

Spareribs profile image
Spareribs in reply to

it's one of the electrolytes - have you had them tested? As Jackie says they should be in balance.

I don't know about fluid retention, sorry (even 'tho I do have occasional puffy ankles, don't think it's the pitting sort, sometimes it can be low iron too apparently)

there's table salt and sea salt - different things. (and iodised salt too)

know what you mean about sweating & salt tablets, I prefer salty stuff too - but been told that's adrenal issues, which I have not looked into yet. J x

in reply toSpareribs

Thanks spare ribs no not had electrolytes tested have to fight for t3 testing! My fluid retention is all over my body and really bad.i know nothing about adrenals x

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to

Fluid retention is usually caused by sodium and potassium being out of balance. Unfortunately, I forget the détails and can't remember where I read it! lol But you could research it a bit and talk to your stupid doctor who wants to put you on a low salt diet!!! Then maybe he'll test them.

My stupid doctor who refuses to test many things, always tests my sodium and potassium. They are both so important.

Makes a very good mouthwash if you have a sore mouth also good to gargle for sore throats.

I've been taking magnesium it's mine my wonder drug I love it

shaws profile image

Marram may well be right as dark chocolate contains magnesium. I think our body craves things if they are in short supply. This is a link of more foods containing magnesium.

I have terrible cravings for sweet things too - well for chocolate. I feel if I let myself I would rather eat a bar of chocolate than have a proper meal. I don't know why it is but I am much worse if I am feeling tired.

I always liked chocolate but I wasn't always like this, I know I have got much worse since being diagnosed with Graves almost two years ago and at first I had lost so much weight I could afford to have the odd bar without it being a problem, but not any more.

It is probably just a bad habit now - I think I started on chocolate just after being diagnosed, think I used to have chocolate for the instant energy and just got used to enjoying it.

Trouble is, if you are like me, it takes the edge of your appetite then you don't feel like eating a proper meal and then of course you crave more chocolate for energy etc. I've been checked out and definitely not diabetic.

For sweet cravings and erratic blood sugar I would suspect candida. It isn't something I'm an expert on though, so I can't help with eliminating it or reducing it.

Do some research into chromium picolinate tablets and L-Glutamine powder. They both help to curb sugar cravings, and the powder (a heaped teaspoonful in cold water or other cold drink) is also good for a leaky gut (it's expensive though). I also think that getting calories from healthy fats like coconut oil is better for you than getting calories from carbs, and helps to keep candida under control. But getting the candida under control in the first place is a tough one!

Emidjemal profile image
Emidjemal in reply tohumanbean

Now that's interesting about the Candida I'll look into it. I love coconut oil and have it every day I looked at Chromium Picolinate today and it was very expensive I wasnt aware of the L-Glutamine but I think it may have to be a bit of an investment in my health I've never felt it this bad as I'm writing this all i can think of is sweet sweet sweet. thanks
