I take mine at bed time which is at least 3 hours after my last meal. You don't want to take thyroid medication before or after food.

Thank you. I eat around 6 so I was thinking around 9 but I don’t go to bed until 10 or so. Not really that big of a deal but this is a change for me and I always appreciate the help.

Your welcome!

I just find it a lot more convenient. I used to take my levo during trip to the bathroom in the small hours but sometimes I would sleep right through...and that meant getting up in the morning, taking the levo and then holding off for an hour before having coffee and breakfast which could be inconvenient.

Night time dosing is much better! :)

I hoping for the best. Thank you

I found the same problem and switched to evening. Able to have morning tea or coffee then, as well as cereal with milk, without having to wait 4 hours!

Any changes take a long time to kick in..mine usually take a week or two..but last night first in taking meds at night!!!slept like the dead but woke UP feeling.like me again!!the day will tell all!!!let you know..have to say it was our lovely pharmacist who suggested changing time and NOT Endo or doctor..its a case of help yourself here I think.. maybe try splitting your dose between am and pm or just trying other brands or capsules.(ask pharmacy what they can get)and ask doc to prescribe..in the end you feel like sh...and think you are going nuts ...which in a way we are..it wont win!!!just do what makes you feel better..hope you find a way to make yours better..will let you know what happens today...Armageddon or not!!!

Keep going dont let it win... regards

Do you mean you were ill because you changed your med schedule?

I take my levothyroxine at 5 pm everyday. Seems to work well for me.

You should wait three hours after eating before you take your pills so they are absorbed adequately. And that includes tea or coffee or any later night snacks.

I take most of my Levothyroxine (100mcg) plus 5mcg T3 as I go to bed, usually around 11pm

Then 25mcg Levothyroxine and 10mcg T3 waking at 7am

5mcg T3 at 3pm

SlowDragon, do you mind me asking why you divide your Levothyroxine in this way? Do you realise a benefit from taking the 25 mcg of Levo in the morning that you wouldn't from taking it all in one go?

Also, with this T3 dosing schedule, I assume you are testing 4 hours after last dose? Or are you skipping one dose on the day of testing?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply towellness1

I get blood test at 9am. Last T3 at 11pm. Last dose Levothyroxine 9am day before

I changed to splitting Levothyroxine about 9 months ago. Several people on here do so. As I was already splitting T3 it wasn't inconvenient to try. I find it better

The Consultant advised me to take it at bed time and this is what I have been doing for a long time now. My thyroid seems to have stabilised and I haven't had to vary my dose since I started this regime. I usually eat at about 6-00 pm and go to bed at 11-00 pm.

I am starting to take my 75mic levo in two separate batches!!!25 in morning 1 hour before breakfast and 50mic before bed but at least 2hours after food/drinks ...doing this because if side effects i.e fuzzy sight..dizziness/unsteady on feet and exhaustion in day which comes on after taking meds..o.k before I take them but afterwards armageddon!!!have tried changing brands .nothing works so trying this to see if it helps..let you know how it goes...

You’ve made me feel a whole lot better reading this, I’m suffering same effects, gp has told me to try taking on a night, I’m having a hellish time of it since starting levo so I’m hoping this works 😟

I take my Levo and T3 whenever I go to bed, which could be anywhere between midnight and 3am.

When I go to bed ,usually around 11pm. But if I have to take other medication within 3 hours I take it when I go for a pee in the middle of the night,

I've been juggling the timing of my meds too but can't hit the sweet spot. Those that take it before ned, I'm assuming that it doesn't affect your sleep? I used to take mine when I got up to go to the loo but I thought maybe I wasn't getting any alleged "boost" from it as I was asleep.

greygoose profile image

Very often, taking thyroid hormone before bed improves sleep. But what's this 'boost' you're talking about? I've never had a 'boost' from either levo or T3. I think that's just another of those medical myths that doctors use - usually to put us off taking T3! lol

infomaniac profile image
infomaniac in reply togreygoose

I must admit I've never had a boost either...I wish! My sleep pattern is all over the place at the mo though so I'm trying to sort it out. I'm back to taking it at my original time now. So much for experimentation!

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toinfomaniac

Well, if you don't try, you'll never know. :)

But, I don't think there is such a thing as a sweet spot concerned with time of taking. That's more about how much you're taking. And, I would say, as long as it doesn't make you feel worse, take it whenever is most convenient for you.

Personally, I didn't find any difference between taking it at night and taking it in the morning, so for my convenience, I now take it in the morning. I'm not hungry when I first get up, anyway. Whereas at night, I often like a cup of tea before bed. Plus, my dog has to take levo every twelve hours, so I take in the morning at the same time as him, and then we both wait an hour for our breakfast. Works for us. :)

Did you ever wonder how you and your dog has the same illness? I'm hypo but my cat was (😥) hyper.

in reply todbrowning02

Ive read that cats seldom get hypo but do get hyper. One of my cats had it. Sadly diagnosed too late, by me not the vet because of getting thin and scrawny with a huge appetite.

By that time the vet said his heartbeat was too fast to measure 😓

I'm so sorry, I lost mine a couple months ago at age 15 he was hyper and had kidney failure. I always wondered if it was from drinking the water in the pool.

in reply todbrowning02

Sorry to hear that. It seems that cats are prone to kidney problems, anyway. Its apparently because of needing a diet high in protein than non carnivorous animals.

I take mine at about 11pm. I have one of those monthly pill organisers with am/pm containers. So as soon as I go to bed (about 11pm) I take my evening dose (150/100mcg Levo and 15mcg T3) and then in the morning as soon as I open my eyes I take 10mcg T3 ( anywhere between 7/8am)
