Hi There is a slight relationship between the two but only slight. Blood usually is stones/grit. Always needs investigating. An ultra sound well show this but by then there you may have passed them, this is very painful, so you should know.If calcium is above fange, this often causes stones, not just renal either. if on vit D ,it is extremely important to have regular calcium tests, to make sure it does not go over the range.if it does D has to be stopped, no matter how low.
Hopefully it will now be fine. Renal function U`s and E`s, does get worse with age. Only really matters if eGFR is below 60, even then can be a lot lower.
Whatever you do, if they offer you a scan using a contrast meduim, REFUSE. The contrast medium is iodine and this will send your thyroid into a massive tailspin. I believe there are other contrast mediums, but I was not offered that, as they are more expensive and the radiologist did not believe me.
thanks Serenfach,I will be sure to find out,I will phone and ask before I go,just to pre warn them
I had the same last year and I was sent for investigation - camera to check kidneys as well as ultra sound. Put on anti biotics immediately by my excellent GP as too much blood to test urine. When urine was able to be tested, phone call one evening to say needed to change antibiotics as I had a particular infection (forgotten type). It cleared up after a week and I have had no problems since.
I've had blood in 2 urine samples at outpatient rheumatology, one last November and one this January. Had kidney scan and cystoscopy and no nasties found, thankfully. Urologist said it was 'just one of those things'. I couldn't see the blood, it was picked up on testing and I also have protein in my urine. I'm back at urology next Friday, so I'll see what happens then. Good luck. PS I didn't have any contrast medium used but you're wise to check xx
Hi Holby and Maggiet thanks so much for your replies,I'm hoping it just one of those things too, mine was picked up during a routine test, kidney disease runs in my family both my brother and aunt needed a transplant and my mum had kidney problems also, so fingers crossed I'm fine,I was reading the leaflet they sent with my appointment and it just said they put jell on your stomach and go over it,so doesn't sound as if I am getting anything injected into me,but wont do any harm to check, thanks again
I'm currently waiting for a second procedure to remove a stone.I very greedily presented with bilateral stones a few weeks ago,and though they managed to break up and drag one out, access to the other was so limited they put a stent in to hopefully dilate the ureter so they can do the lithotripsy needed for the other. I asked the urologist if it was thyroid-related and he replied very definitely that it isn't - it is just one of those things. The ultrasound scan is a breeze with no pain whatsoever;CT scans likewise,so don't worry about these! Good luck.
Thanks mumcat2 for your reply,I just tend to blame my thyroid condition for everything as it usually is responsible for making me feel unwell lol, hope everything go's well for you in your second procedure, best wishes
