Hi Wendy. Like p1pp1ns, I dixn't lose weight before being diagnosed with Graves. My main sign was hand tremors. Symptoms were fast pulse even on rest, and became hypervigillant. Very very jumpy over the least little thing. No energy whatsoever. Spent most of the day just lying down. Iv'e read many times on the forum, that its the high antibodies in the active phases that makes us feel ill. Coupled with all the other horrible symptoms such as fast heart beat and palpitations on the least bit of activity, etc etc. How long since your diagnosis? I think its a bit insensitive that your Gp did not ask you to go to the surgery to see him, and that he told you over the phone! Did you have any idea what he was testing for? Soz for all my questions, just interested in your story. Lynne x

I saw my doc on the 10th of April .. he told me he would do a blood test and excantion for graves . he called me on the 17th and said he had heard from the endro help line and i was to take 20mg of carb a day .he never said a word about the graves test ..So yesterday when I went to pick up my tablets I asked the rep for the results for my blood Test .. she printed it out and it said Postive for graves I was so shocked that my doctor had not told me I found out on my own by a bloody rep at the desk t.I am upset and confused and well I dont trust my doctor at all

Hi wendy ,that is terrible that your doc treats u in that way ,but am.i surprised? No !! You should tell him you are not happy with the way u have been treated ,if you are not comfortable doing so ,you should take someone with u,some of theses docs are useless,i had graves and know how anxious you get with it ,i was on carb for 3 yrs before getting sub total thyroidectomy, wish I could have stayed on it as I have never been right since

Has he arranged for you to see an endo as well as giving you the carb?

By the time I was finally diagnosed I lost weight but I had been at weight watchers for years fighting a losing battle and I have a feeling I had had Graves for years. I was once tested to see if I was hypo and told I was borderline hyper. Unfortunately neither the doctor or I did anything about it.

Tiredness or more like total exhaustion was one of my main symptoms - I was just SO tired all the time, all I wanted to do was sleep. My next worst symptom was my pounding heart - it used to waken me during the night - by the time I was diagnosed I felt like one big pulse if you can imagine that. Then I just had pretty much all the symptoms on the TUK list. But I know where you are coming from with feeling tired. Like p1pp1ns says, just hang on in. I think you need to insist on being seen by an endo though.

I was the same as p1pp1ns - and like you, there were times when I felt as if I was really going mad, I just didn't feel like myself any more. I had also been having spells where I was sure I was getting some sort of dementia. I was incredibly anxious at times as well, I worried all the time about pretty much everything you could imagine. It's hard to believe it but once you get your meds sorted out all that will pass. You do feel like someone else has taken over your body and it might not feel like it but yes, you will feel normal again. :-)

I was very lucky, I just could eat and eat and eat and lose weight but did go to the loo a lot and was tearful - on 40mg of carb daily plus propanalol for palpitations... that was a year ago , decided to go for carb dose according to monthly blood tests (you can do this!) now on 5mg of car every few days and bloods all fine, put on stone, have to watch weight and doing first ever 10k in May.... feel much better, calmer, changed diet (ditched wheat completely) and have monthly massage and acupuncture. It must have been horrible to pick up diagnosis via receptionist. Swap GP and while you feel vulnerable always take someone with you who takes notes. xx
