I think it is a similar thing to restless legs - or at least the two seem to go together - I used to have a nightmare with both, and yes, it seems to be connected to UAT. I often used to wake up with frozen feet because I had put them out of bed to cool off and fallen asleep!

I found that by massaging my feet and calves with moisturiser it gave me some relief. It not only cools them down but also improves the circulation so the blood can carry some of the heat away - at least that is my theory, whatever!

Of course as a last resort you could always fill a hot water bottle with cool (not cold) water and rest them on that. I have resorted to that myself in the summer, and, again, it does bring some relief.

Beaton, I'm coming down off my carbimazole over the last 2 weeks, that I only took for 2 months before my levels

were back to normal (with a LITTLE help from supplements!)

Before being diagnosed with Graves disease, I had ever-increasing hot legs from the knees down once I laid down at night. Like marram, I couldn't keep them under the sheets, they were unbearable - a few nights I kept a spray bottle with water beside the bed, & needed to spray them several times before I could get to sleep, they were that bad.

Over the last few weeks though, there's definitely a reduction in my leg "temperature" happening - not quite back to normal yet, but am looking forward to the day when I can sleep with the sheet on straight again.

My swollen ankles haven't changed though, so although swelling of extremities was a symptom mentioned in lots of sites on Graves that I read, mine haven't changed. I can't see a pattern in what I do, or don't do, that makes the swelling happen, or why sometimes they're back to normal when I get up in the morning, and sometimes they're still very puffy. If it continues, I think I'm going to ask for a kidney test of some sort, as I think it should be our kidneys that control our fluid levels.

Would love to hear if anyone knows any other common reason for ankles swelling?

Cheers,

Liz
