'I dont understand tsh but I have heard of it'
Quote of the week from my gp: 'I dont understand... - Thyroid UK
Quote of the week from my gp
Oh dear god!!! I really do give up
I know! My reply was well thats a bonus'
Perhaps that's a good thing, he won't be adjusting to the test then!
Ha ha.He seemed to think tsh 0.02 was prob ok!
Sounds like ours who'd never heard of T3. The coroner (a doctor) at my husband's inquest didn't know what TSH was either. x
A remark made to me when enquiring about T3 was" Don't go down that avenue.....you'll lose me "!!!!!!!!!!!!
They probably trained at the same medical school
what MEDICAL SCHOOL ???? obviously not one that exists on planet earth !!!! typical pleb ----or didn't he/she actually realise exactly what they were saying ??....alan x
He said it in response to me asking what my tsh level was maybe he didnt think I should know of such things !
After that he kept referring to it as ths x
typical ' snake oil salesman ' its totally beyond my comprehension !!!!! and we have to rely on these idiots for our health and wellbeing !!! surely if you do not know YOU should research check and learn ----always providing you havnt got another bottle of snake oil to sell to yet another mug !!!!!....alan x
Thats awful
OMG !!!!!! What is with these doctors??????
They are so used to saying its a virus they cant remember anything else
It does sound funny but it really is scarey. The Endo I saw recently said "A lot of people try to make thyroid complicated. It isn't." So no joy there for me. Lol
Hi kathy21 yes it is scarey! I am seeing an endo for the first time nrxt week dont know what to expect nothing would surprise me anymore
It would be funny if it wasn't so serious! Honestly, how do these incompetent people sleep at night? It's not as though Hypothyroidism is a rare condition!
I know infomaniac its ridiculous!
My Dr said that I knew more about the thyroid than she did, and I had only mentioned TSH and maybe something else very basic.
They obviously dont spend much time on thyroid issues at med school.
8 weeks on Endocrinology ie diabetes, thyroid & kidney/adrenals. Your GP was possibly in the loo when thyroid was studied :/
Your doctor might like to consider addressing his obvious lack of Continuing Professional Development. He could start here pulse-learning.co.uk/clinic...
It's a CPD module for GPs on thyroid. It contains some ridiculousness, but overall it's probably not too bad.
Edit: That quote and the comments above are a perfect illustration of why GPs and others allow ME/CFS to exist. They haven't a clue about the most common underlying causes and prefer to accept the existence of an undiagnosable, untreatable disease. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious and ruining so many lives.
Yes rosetrees I agree maybe I could leave the pulse learning details on his desk as I leave!
I can't say I am suprised, My first GP said he hadn't heard of T3.
No wonder this site is so busy
Time for me to change GP I think kitten whiskers!
I have recently and this one is no better - They all seem like GMC robots to me, you have seen one, you have seen them all
Unbelievable! Still, as you say, you may be able to work his/ her ignorance to your advantage. At least they won't be jumping up and down about 0.02, like mine would.x
Yes toptomato but I dont think I will be going to see him again.!
oh god! Have you thought about seeking a new GP OP?
Yes I am going to change GPs, going for my first endo appt on thurs so hopefully he might be a bit more informed!
I had 2 indeterminate FNA results. It was being explained that the diagnosis could possibly be follicular thyroid cancer. The Endo said to me "If I could choose a cancer to have it would be thyroid cancer, the good cancer". "I'm jumping with joy" I replied.
Gosh chicken12 these doctors really ought to think before they speak! Hope you are ok?
I am now but I was not at the time. I came out of the consultation absolutely shell shocked. I vomitted when I got outside. I had been told by a professor and 2 Endos I would not have thyroid cancer so a cancer prognosis had not been discussed. He was giving me the results of second FNA when he came out with his quote of the day!
Glad you ok now.Can I ask what is FNA? I new to all of this!

Thankyou! Thats very helpful
Fine needle Aspiration is a method whereby a needle is inserted into a thyroid nodule and samples of cells and fluids are taken and sent off to Pathology to determine if the nodule is malignant or benign. The nodule is usually found when an ultrasound of the thyroid is undertaken. Some people notice a swelling in the neck or have difficulty swallowing, some develop a cough that won't clear or their voice becomes husky. Some people like me have absolutely no symptoms whatsoever.
Some nodules can be determined from the ultrasound as benign. If the nodule is flat shaped, borders are defined, lots of fluid is removed they are usually benign, ones that cause concern are usually all solid, borders are irregular, nodule is taller than wide. These definitions are not set in stone because there are overlaps but that basically is what they are looking for initially.
If there are concerns a further ultrasound is usually carried out with a radiologist present and then it's down to interpretation. What happened to me the endocrinologist thought nodule was benign, infact 5 endocrinologists thought benign but the radiologist had concerns and he overruled the Endos. I have had to undergo a partial thyoidectomy (removal of half of my thyroid) and it has been sent off for biopsy get results Tuesday.
Thamks chicken21 for your detailed reply
Do keep me posted when you get your results.I haven't had any swelling but I have had a cough for months .Never thought anout it being connected but I will now mention it when I go to endo on thurs so thankyou for that.Good luck for tues.
Thank you
I got told yesterday that I should be grateful that I have put on weight as the really bad things make you lose weight!!
