Running out of T3 and panicking!

Because of Christmas and increasing my dose of T3 I've put my order into the Mexican Drugstore too late and now I'm going to be out of them very soon. Not sure what to do. When I asked my GP for T3 before taking my health into my own hands she said she wasn't allowed to prescribe them.

I get T3 prescribed by the GP. It had involved a very long story, including changing GP, travelling out of area to a private specialist. She prescribes due to this specialist. I've had a lot of comments at appointments that it's not how she'd prescribe and what about doing this... (which off past experience I'd don't before and was more ill). It's possible but wasn't achieved overnight.

Does anybody live near you, so you can borrow? That's the only thing I can think of in the short term. If that is deemed as sensible advice to tide you over.

hi Fiona - how much do you take and is it possible to pm me with the details of this specialist - my GP won't prescribe it and as I take 150mcg it is very concerning re costs

I read somewhere that if you are low on meds the best thing is to drop the dose and eke them out, rather than running out completely. The doc is allowed to prescribe whatever is in the British national formulary. You can go online and register for free.... Look up Liothyronine.

Technically doctors can prescribe a huge range of things that are NOT in BNF.

The Drug Tariff is possibly the best place to look:

ppa.org.uk/edt/December_201...

Note that Part XVIII (A, B and C) identify specific restrictions. And, whilst doctors could prescribe many things, they still have to consider whether they can justify their decisions. Hence, though a bottle of whisky is prescribable, it would cause major rumpus when payment was being considered. :-)
