Snapping joints, age or thyroid?

In the last few months my joints have started to make a lot of noise. I sound like a bowl of rice crispies when I move sometimes. It`s quite irritating. I`m wondering if this is down to thyroid issues, or just ageing. I`m on 50mg of thyroxine at the moment.

Hi Hairyfairy, my joints make a lot of noise as well. I'm on thyroxine at the moment, on 150mcg and I'm only 28. My knee, hip and shoulder joints crack although I had snapping hip syndrome that was (temporarily) resolved through arthroscopy. It's worrying when your joints make so much noise as it makes you feel very self-conscious. I did when my hip snapped - it was so loud it could be heard over the other side of the room and it also hurt!

I'm not sure if other people on here have similar problems, I haven't been diagnosed hypothyroid for long so I don't know what's common in hypothyroid sufferers or not, but hang around and someone else will hopefully jump in and give you more help!

Hope you get an answer soon.

Best wishes

Same here, I'm in my 20s too and I definitely click a LOT more than I used to :-) maybe our joints are full of fluid or something because of our thyroid problems? Who knows?! :-)

Hi Usually Crepitus, not nice, but harmless. Mostly due to tissue around the joint eroding, arthritis or ageing etc.If worried try and see a Rheumatologist., one who also specialises in Sjogrens syndrome, as it can also be that, basically lack of lubrication.

Hi Jmward, with problems in your back and ribs do you get pain around there too? I've been getting a lot of pain in the back of my ribs near my adrenals. Not sure if this is a thyroid thing or not.

Hi jo853

Yh the pain is around my ribs and back then it goes in2 my neck and lower back. I thought i was my job that coursed it. But my gp seems 2 think its something else and on alot of medication. But looking on here and seeing what others have put makes me think is there a connection. Ill b asking my gp 2morrow.

Hope ur well 2
