Recently numerous symptoms of under active thyroid have flared up again, but blood tests came back as normal. I know something is wrong.

Going back to GP to insist on more tests. Having read info on this site, please can someone tell me all tests I should ask for? I know about T3 & T4, but what else constitutes the full range?

what are your symptoms?

Thyroid Function tests (TFT) include -

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)

Free T4 (storage hormone)

Free T3 (active hormone)

Also TPO Ab antibody test - if positive indicates autoimmune thyroid disease (most common is Hashimotos). another is TG Ab.

Also suggest irons ferritin, folate, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D - as these tend to be low but are needed for the Thyroid hormone to work properly.

Lots of other tests but these are for starters (GP will usually do 'full bloods' - but most of the above aren't included).

Detailed explanation on the main TUK site.

Hi, Jane, thanks for this. Symptoms are hair loss, extreme tiredness, weight gain, spots, dry face and body skin, constipation, general low mood and no desire to do anything but eat and sit in the house wrapped in a quilt!

you say 'flared up again' - it may be an idea to get hold of any previous tests too (you have the right to) ask for a print out of tests and post them on the forum (with ranges) so folk can help you further. Also have a good look around the forum and main TUK site.

I cannot stress enough the importance of Vitamins/minerals too to help. (e.g. hair loss can be low irons)

I hope you have a GP that listens. Good luck! J x

Yes, I will see if I can get them and also post on the results of the new tests I am hopefully going to have. After living with this for 12 years, I thought I was all sorted but something just hasn't been right over the last 10 months. Thanks for the advice and I will stay in touch x

Maybe it's your adrenals? You will need a 24 hour saliva cortisol test done for that. Good luck.
