What can I take if it really is my cholesterol and not my thyroid doing this; or is it really my thyroid out of whack? Help need advice before Dr. prescribes RX.
Have Hashimoto's and Dr. says cholesterol is hi... - Thyroid UK
Have Hashimoto's and Dr. says cholesterol is high, Thyroid high and Vit D low; can't take Lipitor, generic Lipitor, Zocor or Crestor, help
You absolutely MUST get the thyroid test numbers and reference ranges. And what tests they were!
It is very unfortunate, but we see the phrase "thyroid high" quite a bit - but if thyroid hormone levels are high that is one state - hyperthyroidism; if Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is high, that is another state - hypothyroidism.
Both states are possible with Hashimoto's.
You are entitled to your test results. Have a read here:

Hypothyroidism appears to actually cause high cholesterol. So treating the thyroid can, at least sometimes, cure the cholesterol issue.

Hi Yes, it probably is the thyroid, it does all sort of things when not right. If you ask the receptionist at GP`s or sec at hospital, for results on a print out and make sure they contain the ranges, all Labs can differ. You are entitled to these ,simply because it is your blood.VIt D is not helping either, what is the GP/Endo doing about it? First you need a test for corrected calcium , as must always be in range and D does cause it to go up a little. If OK, then a script for the D, retests both in 3 months to check the levels. If corrected calcium very low then treatment for both together. Then now and again. D is hormonal and can have a direct bearing on the thyroid. If too low it can be really horrible, mine is as I can no longer have it, high calcium! You will get right and feel a different person, it does take a while.
Best wishes,
Jackie
Vitamin d is made from cholesterol. If you have low vitamin d, then you get a nice stash of cholesterol just waiting for you to sit out in the sun so it can convert to d3.
Maybe a holiday abroad, somewhere sunny is needed? ( I wish!)

Virgin coconut oil is reputed to be good for reducing cholesterol. I tried it and it reduced mine. It must be Virgin. Some people don't like the taste but you can put a teaspoon in fruit drinks etc.

I agree absolutely with the coconut oil. I hate the taste and so take 1000mg softgel and don't taste a thing. Also use coconut oil for cooking and strangely that doesn't have the dreaded taste either. If you put "coconut oil and Hashimoto's" in a search engine you will come up with a load of sites extolling the virtues of it.
I would say that elevated cholesterol is definitely a hypo symptom. Mine has been elevated twice during my 10 years of being hypo and each time it went back into the normal range when I was properly medicated. My current doctor was very keen for me to take statins, which I refused, and it is now coming down again. Doctors are much keener to give you statins than treat your thyroid correctly - but thats another story!!
SO true ?!?
Hi marymiles i have hashimotos and my cholestrol is high 7.5 has been like this for over a year now thought that it would go down when i started thyroid medication it didnt my gp told me to go on statins i suffer with fibromialgia he said would make pain worse so i said no cut down on all fatty foods changed milk from full fat to semi skimmed anything to lower it didnt work i now know i have Familial Hypercholesterolaemia my dad died of heart attack mum has angina so it runs in family. I am going to lipids clinic on Monday. Yours could be thyroid related thats why i waited to see if it would go down before taking statins good luck x
Statins have lots of nasty side effects, hence to help with cholesterol issues French people use a supplement in capsule form (no prescription needed) called "Riz rouge" (red rice). I snack on Nairn's oat cakes (which don't contain Baker's yeast as I'm highly allergic to it) and I regularly eat porridge (done in water with pinch of preferably Himalayan salt as it still contains natural minerals) topped with frozen or fresh berries (blue/rasp/strawberries or black/red currants).
Some while ago, the bad name that eggs had as regards cholesterol issues was lifted. More recently, I read that what we eat hasn't got as much influence in our chlesterol levels as previously thought.
So in my humble opinion, raised cholesterol levels are like a marker (or analytical tool) that something else is wrong with an individual's health that needs to be addressed. It is good to remember, that cholesterol is an essential nutrient, crucial for cellular health, and also necessary as a substrate for steroid production in the body.
I have found that raising my Vit D3 levels has lowered my cholesterol from 7.2 to 5.99. I am on 75 mcg Levothyroxine and have been for 16 years, but since changed from Eltroxin to Amdipharm generic levothyroxine my TSH has started to rise. Can only hope Eltroxin will be back soon. Janet.
