Nothing borderline about a tsh of 5.9 despite what the doctor might say.

Every other country in the world would treat you with a tsh over 2.5. / 3

There was a press release issued by the society for endocrinolgy. In April 2010 which said that a low tsh is ok and a tsh of more than 4 can lead to heart problems. Ist shows up if you do a google search on press releases....... Soc. of endocrinolgy

In the meantime, suggest you read the book by dr Antony toft, published in association with the bma..... Understanding thyroid problems,,,,,, Available in chemists and amazon for less than £5

And ask for your antibodies to be measured.... If they are raised indicating Hashimoto's thyroiditis, there is no reason din the world not to treat you.....

rang gp on Friday receptionist said antibodie blood test was normal so still going to appointment on Monday see what happens

Couldn't agree more. I had a useless GP who kept me undermedicated for several years at ranges of 4 and 5. Now i manage my own health and have a negative TSH. I'm so much better. Borderline........ yeah right!

Of course you can insist, but he can refuse. You could ask for a referral to an endocrinologist, but this can be out of the frying pan into the fire. Dr toft says you should really be given a trial of homones to see if they make You feel better....... You could take in the book..... He cannot argue with dr toft who is well respected..... Well actually he can, but it would be difficult.

thankyou

I agree....advise to get the book ...put markers in every page relevant to your situation and take it with you to your GP!

I was repeatedly told my thyroid was normal .I was feeling really bad.

It was only after contacting HU support group with a TSH reading of 4.8 that I learned a lot, bought the book in my chemists and took it to my GP appointment and he started to listen. He has now doubled my medication along with regular tests to see how I go.TSH down to 1.7 after 6 weeks and due another test on Friday.I'm improving all the time.

I do hope you get the help you deserve ...good luck and best wishes.X

What is border line about an FT4 at 10.1? You do not give its range but no matter, anyone can see it is extremely low so consequently you will have very little T3. These GPs make me so angry, how would your GP like to experience what you are going through with that FT4 level?

You are probably deemed "sub-clinical" but the definition of sub-clinical is precisely that there are NO symptoms and you have symptoms, and were you to investigate the symptoms list on the main site, which has other invaluable info., you might be surprised just how many symptoms you actually have.

Dr Toft's book: See Page 44 particularly, where he advocates treatment where a "normal" T4 but a raised TSH level are found as it is known that 5 to 20% develop more obvious hypothyroidism each following year so it is better to start treatment.

Lots of valuable info also on the main site:

Hi. Check my post and follow the link on it - its from The British Medical Journal and clearly states that TSH over 5 with symptoms should be offered treatment/trial...

Good luck!
