We have to learn a lot when we are diagnosed with a thyroid gland dysfuction as many GPs appear not to have knowledge of clinical symptoms, a higher cholesterol is one, as it joint pains etc.

Please get a print-out from your surgery of your blood test results and post on a new question. Make sure the ranges are also stated as labs differ and it makes it easier for members to help.

Also, if you haven't had a Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate ask for these to be done too.

If you click on following link and cursor down to my response and click on the links below it.

Low iron and Vit D can cause problems in themselves. I hope GP is treating iron also. Everything needs to be in balance for us to be (or try to be) well.

Hi michelle, Gp's seem to put more stock in the test results instead of the patient's symptoms. You are going to have to push for more treatment so insist on seeing your own results and check to see that your FT4 and FT3 (if they will test it) are in the upper part of the ranges.

Raised cholesterol was how they used to diagnose hypothyroidism, so you should be on levothyroxine in my opinion. My cholesterol was raised and my TSH was only 6.0 but I had a lot of symptoms and a lot of family members with hypo, so I was put on levo and eventually my cholesterol came down from 7.6 to 5.6

I am having the same problem with high cholesterol, plus Gallstones, fluid retention as well, same problem, the Doctor will not link it to the Thyroid problem, I did not know, until recently myself, so trying to find out more info. Wish I could be more helpful
