As it's a prescription only medication, the only way to get Armour Thyroid or any other brand of desiccated thyroid preparation is on prescription, usually through a GP or endocrinologist.

Hi there,

At the risk of getting wrist slapped here - I have been reading when people find that they have exhausted the help they can get from NHS they are self medicating and purchasing their NDT from overseas. Now this may not be everyones idea of the way to go - but many have found that this is their only resort and they have managed successfully to self medicate. Also not everyone can afford to see private health pracs.

I know that I will not be held ransome over my health by the NHS and if eventually it comes to pass that the thyroxine is less than useless on its own I will be looking at my options if GP/Endo/God and whoever do not enable me to get the meds I need to affect optimum treatment.

My rant is over , thank you and such a horribly hot day as well.

I answer my own question - you can get Armour thyroid from the addresses below. It would seem any GP who prescribes it runs the risk of being struck off and made an example of. The reason is big pharma want to flog their expensive useless drugs and don't care if you are ill because they want to make money and the more sick you get the more drugs they can sell you. I agree the only way is to self medicate. No wrist slapping it is the GMC that needs a sock in the jaw for keeping us ill.

There is a great book and website Overcoming Thyroid Disorders by Dr Brownstein, good website too drbrownstein.com, it gives you most of what you need to know. Also visit tpa-uk.org.uk which has all the UK links you'll need. There are also doctors up there that can help you. Below are the addresses of places to source Armour. Good luck and get well everybody, you can do it.

UL Medicines have informed us that "We are now working directly with Forest and can get 0.5 grain, 1 grain and 2 grain dosages". They also tell us that there is no need for a clinical need letter, but to satisfy the MHRA the prescriber must have it documented that it is being prescribed for hypothyroidism, such as in the patient’s notes or better still by putting “for hypothyroidism” on the prescription. The dispensing pharmacist might require the prescription to be written as “armour thyroid” or “natural thyroid” but they will advise what they need. They also stock the other brands of natural thyroid hormone.

UL Medicines cannot dispense direct to the public. Your pharmacist can contact them at UL Medicines Ltd, Hampton House, 3d Regal Way, Watford, Hertfordshire WD24 4YJ 01923 204333.

We have been informed by North Meols Pharmacy Ltd, (chemist-4-u.com) that they have Armour available in various strengths. All you need to do is to send your prescription to them either at their address:

North Meols Pharmacy, 35a Greenhey Place, East Gillibrands, Skelmersdale WN8 9SA

or you can download and print a freepost label from

chemist-4-u.com/greenhey.pdf

and they will send the order back to you.

They say they have a 48 hour turnaround. They also stock the other brands of thyroid hormone replacement. There is no need for a letter from your doctor and all your doctor needs to write on the prescription is the name of the medicine, the dosage and the number of tablets. If you have any queries contact them on 01695 725994and ask for Shamir Patel.

Springfield Pharmacy (124 Sheen Road, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, TW9 1UR Tel: 0208 2558096) tell us that they now have Armour in stock.

Other brands to try are ‘Nature-Throid’ and ‘Westhroid’, both manufactured by RLC Labs, and ‘Thyroid’ manufactured by Erfa Canada Inc.

Armour, Nature-Throid and Westhroid have all their different dosages on back order.

Katymarchant, Armour, Nature-Throid, Westhroid are all brands of prescription only desiccated thyroid medications, which cannot be legally obtained in the UK without prescription. The UK sources you have quoted above are not legally able to supply you with any prescription only thyroid preparations if you do not have a prescription.

I am lucky that I have a great accupuncturist who is also a registered doctor so he will help me.

I no longer take Armour but when I did I didn't have prescriptions, I bought mine online but was not self medicating as I was being monitored by a Doctor.

And this is why we need to fight for legitimate effective management/treatment for thyroid conditions.

There are different perspectives/experiences of what people are doing to help themselves and yes, maybe going it alone may be seen as risky.

Maybe we need to find ways of helping each other with names of pracs that are sympathetic - bearing in mind the possibility that not everyone can afford to pay for private consultations to a) get an official diagnosis and b) to have ongoing consultations following treatment being prescribed.

Meantime people continue to suffer and waste chunks of their life. And this is so very sad.
