How much calcium do you need to take with a vit... - Thyroid UK
How much calcium do you need to take with a vitamin D tablet/drop? Is a glass of milk ok?
yes, to be honest no need to take any calcium, there is enough in the diet, and usually having some 'fat' with vit D can help to absorb it
seems when you get vit d from docs it comes with calcium - like Adcal? I think I saw posts about it, but that's all they usually can prescribe (as on their limited supply list) but too much calcium can cause additional problems too... don't actually know, just trying to remember!
best get a calcium test anyway?

I only take Vit D3 in milk or OJ (no extra calcium as I eat a lot of dairy anyway) J x
It was me that has been prescribed VitD by the doc, and both he tried me with contained calcium.

Thanks Ann, yes seen this several times too.
I'm a bit wary of supplimenting calcium. J x
Did they work well for you?
not sure if you replied to me or Anne.
Anyway - yes, definitely worked for me (awful shin pain to start 'tho) was under an ortho doc who wanted to op on bilateral carpal and cubital tunnel - avoided!
You usually only get 10% from food - most from sun (what sun!). Something has made my TSH decrease from over 5 (5 high results over 2 years since PT op) now 1.6 - and I'm only on Vit D (OK with a magnesium spray, epson salts, 3 brazil nuts and avoiding gluten) but of course this means I am still untreated for other Thyroid symptoms - like cold, tired, brainfog etc. but in my mind when compared to constant PAIN - I feel better. Luckily for me my endo tested my calcium and it's ok, which was a relief.
My vitamin D (which I did privately through the NHS hospital test in the post that's been mentioned here) was inadequate on their reference range at 47 and then I read the British Medical Journal and others would call that deficient. I'd like to get it up to about 80.
I tried taking vitamin D before but it made me tired. So this time I'll try a lower dose.
Reading this with interest as my Vitamin D is very low at 13! My GP wouldn't prescribe saying I should improve my diet but my Endo has written and insisted. I see him (GP) tonight so wondering what he'll prescribe and whether there will be any side effects. Didn't realise it could make you tired
Hi Ali, I take it as my Vit D was low at 13 as well. My doctor wouldn't prescribe so I buy mine in. I haven't noticed any unusual tiredness but a lot of my aches and pains resolved.
Good luck
Thanks Tracey,
That gives me a lot of hope. My GP has now prescribed 10,000 unit capsules to be taken for 2 months then more blood tests! I finally feel that I am getting somewhere x
Your gp needs some updating on current research into Vitamin D! In the light of new evidence, adequate amounts cannot be supplied by diet alone. We need UVB rays from the sun in order to manufacture this hormone (yes, that is what it is) in the skin. As we don't see that much of the former, supplemnation is vital for optimum health. If you need any further info please pm me. Barbaraj
Your GP SHOULD give you a 50,000iu a day dose for two weeks. Don't know if I have sent you this link before but it tells you exactly what your GP should and should not be doing and giving you.

Hi all - I find this interesting I too was told that I should take Vit D - could you advise what dose/amount is best as I brought some basic pills from chemist but not sure it's enough ? I also get awful muscle pains & throbbing all over - so this might help ? also I substituted rice milk for cows - would I still be getting enough calcium from this ? - thank you
Thank you nobodysdriving - very helpful
Hi If your corrected calcium is very low, then you can have calcium with vit D on a script. However, D always causes the calcium to rise, it i corrected calcium that matters and should always be in range. There is a lot in food, and that is usually just right,If calcium goes above range, then D has to be reduced and even stopped to keep calcium in range, it must never go over. even if D on the floor.

But remember if you take Adcal, take more than 4 hours after thyroxine- it says that on the info leaflet. Don't know which affects how the other works.
