I have recently been diagnosed with Hashimotos and am just looking at other things that happen to me.

Does anyone else get frequent bouts of cold sores?
Hi Jilly,
I'm Hyperthyroid and due for a complete Thyroidectomy in the next few weeks. I've had cold sores up my nose for almost a year. It wasn't until I found my B12 was very low and started 3 monthly injections that they started to clear.
Hope this helps.
Lynn
hi Lynn I really sympathise with you about cold sores in the nose..If I can get the cream on at the tingling stage then it usually stops them developing but the last few times it hasn't worked. I think I am going to have to supplement my vitamins and minerals by myself. My Gp says my blood tests don't suggest any deficiencies.I have had them since a small child and still haven't worked out the trigger for them-I know it's not the sun!
Glad the B12 worked for you. Best of luck with your operation.Have you been waiting long.
thanks for your suggestion. Jill
Hi, I have Hashimotos too and prone to mouth ulcers and nasal ulcers but not actually cold sores or at least I don't think that's what they are! I also get a ridiculous amount of sore throats but have no idea if this has anything to do with the Hashis. I am deficient in Vitamin D though and I now know that this can have a bearing on your immune system so it will be interesting to see if that improves once I'm treated. My B12 is also low so thanks Lynnp I shall look at supplementing as it might help.
Hi Ali I think everything comes down to our immune systems .Frequent infections are one
of the symptoms -so you still get them, I was hoping they might end when I'm treated. Do you see an endo or are you managed by your Gp?[Hope you don't mind my asking] I am going to have to supplement by myself as Gp says bloods are ok.
thanks for replying. Jill
I've been treated (badly) by my GP for the last 4 years but will be seeing an Endo privately on Wednesday thanks to the generosity of my parents! I've been so ill for over 12 months and my GP has insisted bloods were ok so following lots of advice on here I asked for a print out. When I finally got it I was rather surprised to find my TSH had gone up to 4.39 (.35 - 4.00) and my Vitamin D was 13 (>50) yet the GP said the Vitamin D was only slightly low and I should improve my diet! So my advice would be if your GP says your bloods are ok please get a print out and check for yourself to make sure. My B12 is technically in 'normal' range but on the low side so I know I'll have to sort that out for myself.

Hi Ali Briefly diagnosed in January as hypothyroid put on 25mcg of Levo went back after 2 weeks as felt even worse Dr took me off it Wait a few weeks and then do full blood test and include thyroid antibodies -result Hashimotos I asked about tests for vitamins and minerals but he said that my blood results didn't warrant further tests or that the lab won't do them. I did get the printout[which I learnt from here] but thanks for reminder.I am back on levo but 25mcg every other day Best of luck with your endo appointment. Please post how you get on.

I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid in December 2012, and this post has made me wonder if cold sores and under active thyroids are somehow connected? Try L-lysine tablets from Holland & Barrett. I have suffered from cold sores for years - they used to appear if I was under stress, more recently when I am in the sun. Since taking L-lysine I have not suffered with cold sores at all.
Thanks for the reply Thomas21 I've also had them since i was a small child.I use cream when I get the familiar tingle and it usually stops them developing but the last few times it hasn't worked.I got 3 all at once and they make you feel so awful. I will look for the tablets next time I go to town. Thanks for your suggestion Best wishes Jill
I totally agree with you. l-lysine works for me too. Also using lip balm with SPF 15 or more all year.

Lysine has been a game changer for me with regard to cold sores. Better than prescribed medication. If I take everyday the cold sores stay away.
