urgency

hi

I saw the doctor a few months ago and he gave me the fodmap diet to follow. I have been doing that and also eating gluten and dairy free

I am much better but the one thing I still have is urgency I have literally a few minutes to get to the toilet. I have been afraid to go out as I have had a few accidents it’s so upsetting. It’s not diarrhoea but I just can’t hold on.

Has anyone beaten this and can give me some advice I feel so anxious about it and it’s affecting my quality of life.

Thank you.

hi Janet,

Those feelings of wanted to go No. 2s is a bit complex I think. In my experience of IBS:

- only recently officially diagnosed, since Christmas but suffering for a few years mainly gas interfering with my sleep patterns.

If that feeling of wanting to go to the loo comes on suddenly, it usually is linked to what I have just eaten - so your body is saying that it can’t tolerate that food in that amount.

That’s what i have found so helpful adopting this strict but soo helpful Fodmaps diet. It helps work out which food you are intolerant to. Or maybe you have just eaten too much of that particular food - eat a little less and you might not have a reaction.

Have you download the Monash app? There is a small cost but it’s full of useful information to help get some control over this annoying sometimes debilitating condition.

The app provides information on how much you can eat of certain foods before a reaction/intolerance happens! Hope this helps.

You could try some tips on this website:

ibsresearcher.com/

In summary, I would try things in this order:

1. Alflorex probiotic, which has been scientifically studied for IBS on a 3 month trial.

2. This may increase food tolerance. If you have any remaining food intolerances ask for a GP referral to a dietitian to take you through the FODMAP elimination and reintroduction diet. By taking Alforex first hopefully the food intolerances will be less.

3. Alongside try the Nerva gut directed hypnotherapy app or meditation or mindfulness techniques (plenty online or YouTube)

I'm afraid I have the same problem and it's terrible, I have damaged spintcher and nerve damage and I am increasing fibre into my diet which is making it worse. I was advised to go on your diet, but when I saw the Gastro Consultant at the hospital she changed it. I am waiting for a appointment with physio, so maybe that is what you need, I also take loperamide 1mg and if I go out I am wearing pads. I am also seeing the Incontinence Team soon, so perhaps your GP would help in this way. Oh I have diverticular and diverticulitis. Take good care

Thanks for your reply I think I will see my gp again as it’s not getting any better I have diverticula too I may ask him to refer me to a gastric doctor. I wear tena pants when I go out which saves my clothes if I have an accident but it’s still upsetting if it happens isn’t it?
