You might have a bowel bacteria infection as the wind might be due fermentation. If your GP is willing ask for a course of antibiotics to see if it makes any difference. It is worth a try.

Assume you have investigated the kinds of foods that could cause this; e.g. lentils, chick peas, haricot beans, cabbage, fizzy drinks? I dont know much about fermented food and drink, maybe someone else could comment.

Yes high FODMAP foods can cause lots of gas. Cauliflower is the worst for me!

Charcoal is good for this, but has to be used with care as it may interfere with other medication. If you do take it, leave 2 hours or so between anything else you might be taking. This isn't a cure though but may help if it's bad as a temporary measure, you have to get to the root cause and find out what's causing it. Usually, it's certain foods, but can be anxiety too. I keep charcoal in the cupboard for when I get a flare up, which usually comes after a day of wind and other symptoms.

I too suffer from this & wonder if it is the metformin I am on for diabetes. I have IBS as well. Could that be the same for you I wonder.

They call them Metfartmin cos they are known to cause wind

Right. Not heard that before. So just as I thought its the medication which in lots of cases whatever it is it cures a problem but causes another & so on & on. Aagh!!!

Yes, it's typical polypharmacy. Medicate a problem then medicate the side effects of that medication....and on and on. Because the conventional 'wisdom' is to not bother to look for the underlying root cause!

I know exactly what you’re saying. same here. I am 74 female and it’s so embarrassing. Mine is definitely worse in the evening and my husband thinks I’m disgusting but I get so bloated and uncomfortable.

I’m now at the stage that I won’t go round family and friends for the evening.

I do take peppermint capsules from Amazon. I before I eat and they do seem to ease wind.

The simeticone in that worked miracles in 'infacol' when my son was such a hungry breastfeeder that he didn't latch on easily, consequently swallowing a lot of air at the same time. I can understand it working for air/gas in the stomach but are you saying that it also helps with gas/flatus from the 'lower intestine' too?

That's simeticone which certainly works for stomach gas (eg my colicky son who sucked in a lot of air breastfeeding). I cannot see how it works further down the gastrointestinal tract. I've managed to decrease gas/farting by researching FODMAP foods and working out which to reduce or avoid. Cauliflower is my worst!

I have this sometimes. I find constipation makes it worse. I find probiotics have helped eating less sugar especially at night this is when I'm worse. Windeeze do help to a degree .

Fortunately I live on my own in the middle of nowhere! You should hear me in the morning after I wake up ! Nellie the Elephant trumpeting all over the place. Really VERY noisy and long farts!

In the bath I raise so many bubbles. It is so noisy it's even funny in a horrible way. I would rather it came out though, than got trapped, which is painful.

I hear people generally fart about 20 times a day (sometimes more) That is healthy gut people.

It seems all my wind gets bottled up to come out all at once in the morning. Then maybe 2 or 3 little ones a few hours after dinner, then that's it. I don't know why my body likes to let it all out in the morning.

Ir's been that way for over 4 years and I cannot see that changing now.

Now the weird thing is when I didn't have IBS, when I passed wind it almost always smelled of something. Not terrible, but a bit "vegetarian", like chewed grass or something. Now, since IBS, my wind had ZERO scent to it and that I don't understand because that's for the first time in my life and I've lived a few decades.

My "problem" is the sheer noise of it!! But I have got used to that and there's nobody else to please or offend!

One word of advice....dogs seem to think it's funny. They are not at all offended by noisy farting. They just wag at you.

The worst thing is if it won't pass and you get pain. Better out than in.

But I live in a different situation, on my own in the countryside, but socially it's not a super appealing thing. I know. You are MEANT to pass wind, because everyone does...maybe 20 times a day. Do remember that. But it still feels awful in company. The best I can suggest is if you feel one coming, go to the bathroom, or maybe step out into the garden?

I think it is a common IBS thing that it has ZERO scent. I would love to know the answer. I also have SIBO. Maybe you have it too? For some, antibiotic helps reduce the symptoms.

I've had this too! It was so bad it has essentially destroyed my intimacy with my husband because I know I wouldn't be able to hold in the wind and would be mortified to pass it during an intimate moment. Especially since it will often smell horrible. The only thing that stopped my wind was going on a candida diet, which was essentially a low-carb diet. I cut all sugar, and only had meat and green veggies (with the exception of bell peppers). I also worked in natural antifungals the second week. Oregano oil would be a good one, as is coconut oil, or you can buy a blend on Amazon for fairly inexpensive. I did that for 6 weeks, but within two weeks all my stomach issues were gone. I was even able to eat things like broccoli, which before would have made me so gassy I would want to curl up and die. I can't really explain what happened with my mood, but it was so light and happy. I've never struggled with bad moods, but it just got so much lighter. I'm now working some carbs back into my diet, and I've been taking probiotics and fiber, which is a prebiotic, for the past month. I'm doing great. I am going to stay off refined sugar and eat mostly low-carb, but I apparently have a rare condition that causes my cholesterol to go off the charts when I eat too little carbs, so I have to eat some. If you do the diet, prepare for die off, which is where you're going to feel like you have the flu, headaches, nausea, etc. That happened right away for me. I took a binder, like activated charcoal, until the symptoms went away in a few days. Drink lots of water too. It's worth a try!
