l think l have the beginnings of IBS with alternative constipation and diarrhea. This has been ongoing for 2 months. I have GP appointment on 8th November. Can someone tell me if you get yellow mushy poo/diarrhea with IBS? Sorry to be so direct, but it is causing me anxiety which is not helping. Thank you.

Hello , I'm sorry you are going through this ordeal . I have had it before, once or twice. It's good you have an appointment. It sounds like IBS please try not to worry it makes it worse . Also don't let the Doctor fob you off by just saying it's IBS insist on tests so you can rule out many things . I hope you feel better soon

Here are the tests you should expect from your GP:

nhs.uk/conditions/irritable...

Statistically it is more likely to be IBS.

Yellow stool may relate to bile acid malabsorption, so you can discuss this possibility with your GP since there are separate tests and treatments for that too.

By the way, if you have alternating diarrhoea and constipation, it could be that you are constipated with overflow diarrhoea. This is where liquid food backs up behind impacted stool. In these instances, it is important to work on the constipation by increasing fibre if you are able. You can ask your GP to do a physical exam to check whether they can feel stool is backed up in your colon.

Good luck.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so it’s very important that you get checked out by your GP, but yes, I had IBS and it messed with my digestion royally. If you do have IBS ( and I hope it is nothing else) I recommend the FODMAPs exclusion diet, and Symprove - tastes horrible, and it took about 12m to work completely, but it worked for me, though everyone is different. Good Luck 🍀

Thanks for your help. It is a depressing and miserable thing to deal with. I will look into the diet you advise. I am sticking to bland food at the moment. I already have hiatus hernia and the loose bowels has caused haemorrhoids so l am in a lot of pain. It makes you cry doesn’t it? I am an anxious person and suffer health anxiety which is probably why this has happened with all the stress. Take care.

I was prescribed 10mgs Amitriptyline, once a day for my anxiety which has greatly helped.

Hope you get help from your GP.
