Simalvia (Simeticone and Alverine)

My gp put me on simalvia when it came to light he couldn’t just prescribe simeticone which I was taking over the counter to alleviate the upper gi bloating and trapped gas.

I’ve noticed since I’ve been on both of these that I have severe constipation (I’m usually pretty well controlled or have IBS D)

Has anyone else taken either or both of these and had the same issue with constipation?

Thanks

Gosh, didn’t realise that about simeticone. I take just one tablet if I have acid reflux or wind, but only VERY rarely. I do sometimes get IBS symptoms and constipation but didn’t know simeticone could do that. Have you tried taking fybogel every day? That’s meant to help. I used to work in a pharmacy and it was recommended. Many patients who had issues with medication used it.

I take two sachets of fybogel daily and have for a couple of years. Worked fine until I tried the Fodmap which then made me severely constipated and I started the simetocone around the same time and since then my bowels just won’t play ball

You tried low fodmap or you tried to eat fodmaps? I'm pretty sure fodmaps gives me constipation now but im still trying to figure things out. :(

Fybrogel is just psyllium husk but with added sweeteners. Sweeteners are bad for the gut so i would just buy psyllium husk powder from health food shops. It has instructions on for use. I think 1/2 tsp max for me for C! It gives me D if i take more.

I have been prescribed Simalviane because of my IBS C and functional bloating. I don't feel that my constipation is getting worse taking this medication. It actually helps somewhat for the functional bloating thanks to simeticon as one of the ingredients. The other ingredient, alvarine citrate is for alleviating bowel spasms.

It works brilliantly for my bloating. I don’t really get spasms fortunately but it does help those on the occasions I get cramps.

It's prbably the alverine causing the constipation. It relaxes your bowel and slows down peristalsis. Best buying some windeze or similar from the chemist

I was taking the windeze capsules before the doctor gave me the script. I was taking 4 capsules a day and the cost was prohibitive hence the prescription

Where you constipated when you were just taking the windeze?

yes I am IBS D but use windease sometimes to relieve the pain from trapped wind. Don’t get constipated.

Good luck

Thanks. I’ve increased my insoluble fibre and water to try and help but so far no joy

hmm interesting. I took Dr Gut this year or last year for first time (containing simethicone) and i have had constipation all year. I thought it was due to dairy free and adding back fodmaps and also LGG probiotic. I never suspected Dr Gut. I took quite a few times the first week and then felt better. Then take sporadically now as dont get much pain anymore..

I have ibs c bloating and gas . I take simeticone it helps with the gas but causes bad constipation if I use it for to long.

I think that’s what’s causing my issues. I’m going to try staying off it for a few days and just take mebeverine if I have pain and see if that helps as the constipation is awful
