Gastroscopy aftermath!

I had a gastroscopy yesterday evening. He went down into my stomach and small intestine. I've had a few of these in the past - the last one 20 years ago. I cannot remember feeling quite so bruised and sore as I did last night and still do. He took a biopsy and so I know my stomach will be sore and will recover. My throat is also very sore, as is my left shoulder on the side I laid.

I just needed a moan really 😆

That's just not pleasant for you, but it's good that you got those tests done. Things will heal up I am sure, but it might take a few days. Did they mention any diet you have to eat for a few days?

I think soft foods are going to be what you'll need, and I'd stay away from ice cold or hot drinks. If you can usually drink coffee or tea it might be best to make sure they're quite weak and have cooled down some before drinking.

Jelly would be ideal food at a time like this, and all sorts of soups. I am sure jelly has so much artificial stuff in it now though. I remember when I was a little kid and I'd had Measles, and had such a sore throat, my mother made all sorts of flavours of jelly for me. The doctor (then) said it wasn't as "junk" as she thought it was, and would actually give me some nutrition. But maybe times have changed.

I'd definitely stay away from tomato soup though as the acid in it might be irritating. But cream soups might be OK, things like cream of chicken, mushroom, asparagus, and oxtail etc. Mashed potatoes would be good, and lightly cooked scrambled eggs.

I hope the soreness dies down in a day or two.

I had same procedure last week. Still feeling uncomfortable, taking arnica good for bruising and slippery elm which is healing for the gastro tract. Can't have coffee ( normally my choice of drink) but herbal teas soothing. Also ice cream and yoghurt is soothing on the throat.

I was immediately diagnosed with sliding hiatus hernia and waiting on biopsy results.

Good luck

I've had 4 in the past, the last one 20 years ago when I was in my 40's. I didn't feel any different afterwards. This one was a bit more of an ordeal - maybe because I'm older! I'm also very slight which I think makes our insides smaller too! I can swallow better this morning and my stomach calmed down a bit last night. The biopsy was done for H Pylori which was negative (I got that result in 5 minutes!) and there was nothing else abnormal thankfully. Now referred for a CT scan of my thorax -JOY

CT scan isn't invasive so that should be OK. Only problem would be if you're claustrophobic as it's in an enclosed space but really it's just like an x-ray lying down. Hope you managed to enjoy your omelette!

Thanks Luisa. They didn't mention diet at all but I had soup yesterday! I think the older we get, the less able our bodies can deal with trauma! I've a long day at work today and still feel a bit rough. Aiming for omelette tonight 🙂X

Did you actually know anything about the procedure or did you have sedation

I chose not to have sedation because I didn't want to spend any longer in the hospital than I had to. I've had 4 over the past 30 years and not had sedation for any of them. I don't know whether getting older is the reason this one was so unpleasant, as Poppyseed8 suggests, but I would not be surprised. I don't want to put anyone here off though!

the trouble is our bodies are not so forgiving like they were when we were younger so things bruise us more and take long to heal or calm down
