IBS do things get worse, or is it a different condition
I was diagnosed with IBS decades ago and have also spent the last year suffering from much worse symptoms. The problem with IBS seems to be it is a different experience for everyone, so it very often feels like a struggle to get anywhere. Two things I've been told during my round of tests this time is that there is some belief that IBS symptoms may get worse as we get older and also that you can change from IBS C to D and vice versa🤷♀️ As you say, I hope your tests point you in the right direction, so very best of luck.
wow 20+ years before they decide to test you!!!
That's ridiculous if you ask me. Although it did take a couple of years for them to do a stool sample with me.
Yes, I get lumps in my abdomen when I get constipated. Try having flaxseeds (small amounts to start with to let your digestion get use to it), but you have to drink lots of water too to allow the flaxseeds to work. I was like this over the weekend and I started off with half a teaspoon as my stomach is very sensitive. After a couple of days it worked and now feel a lot better. Hope that helps.
thank you, think ive tried flaxseed before, will give anything a go at the moment, proper getting me down x
Have you been to your GP. They can prescribe Movicol which might help.
hi tried movicol now made it worse, then lactalose big gulp before bed was working then stopped working, now back to the good old fybogel and 2 senna at night, not doing much, certainly not helping with the pain 😒😒😒
i have had IBS for over 30 years and i think it does get worse as you get older. Or when you are younger you don't worry about it so much. It would be great if it got better with age, it would give us all something to look forward to
It's most definitely got worse for me. My IBS started in the early 90's and I'm 63 now. It really took off 10 years ago and a CT scan diagnosed some diverticular. I wonder whether the things that don't bother us when we are younger just progress a bit - like intolerances and diverticular. Some days I feel like it ruins my life too - but I carry on and it's difficult.x
I went through a time when my IBS seemed to get worse, with more flare ups and me just feeling worse, exhausted etc. I'd had tests to show there was no inflammation going on or other issues, but I was starting to get worried, wondering if something had been missed.
But that really bad time started to steady out a bit more, and then I didn't seem so bad.
Some symptoms changed a bit. They were still there but not as bad and I found I could eat just a few more foods, and even some fruit again if I was careful. I guess that's been for about the past 8 months or so? But I am always 'fingers crossed' about it as IBS can do anything it seems. Get better, get worse, go away, come back....and not most of the time for reasons I can understand.
Yes IBS can change sometimes.
I occasionally get a bout of constipation but was diagnosed with IBS-d basically. When wind gets stuck somewhere it can cause a huge lump in my tummy, and as it moves (sometimes slowly) the lump will disappear and pop up somewhere else.
I have watched that happening in the bath in the mornings! It is quite a freaky thing but I know what it is now with my tummy anyway.
Any lump that stays where it is and never goes away, get the doctor to check. It could be a hernia or something.
It's good you had the poop samples done. They can tell quite a lot from them, such as if you have inflammation or not, etc.
hi all your symptoms l had went to a private Gastroenterolist and he even dismissed it as I. B. S constipation to take laxative daily. Then l went to see another specialist who send me for a ultrasound scan 9 months of constant pain expecially after eating scan showed Gallstones so awaiting to get gallbladder removed all l can say keep going back and pushing for the test you need l still have I. B. S but l knew this pain wasn't I. B. S but had to keep nagging for test but my doctor was excellent and even said until we find the cause of my pain he would not give up sending me for tests. Please don't give up
