Here we go again

I was doing better, now the stomach pain is back worse than before. I guess its my own fault for eating McDonald's I was reading that unexplained weight loss could be colon cancer. I'm not sure it is unexplained as I have cut a lot of foods out. Processed foods . I'm just so scared to go to the doctors in case it's something else, as my flare ups this year have been ongoing. It's a lonely place to be having IBS .

Just feeling sorry for myself I guess

Oh gosh, I don't blame you for feeling sorry for yourself at times. I do too. IBS can be not only horrible to experience because of the symptoms, but scary too because we always think "what if?"

Weight loss can definitely happen because lots of foods have to be cut out or don't suit the gut any more. Flare ups can last for days or even longer sometimes, and it's hard to eat so many foods when going through a flare. So losing some weight could be pretty logical really.

I know I have to stick to plain and simple food prepared at home, daren't even eat 75% of what friends might offer me, or what's available in a restaurant or cafe. I don't know how I'd do with a Macdonald's!

But you wanted to treat yourself, so no harm in having a little splurge. Keep your food VERY simple for a few days at least, and hopefully this flare will pass quickly.

I get stuff like that happening but usually when I splurge on eating very healthy food! haha....

Can't win -eh?

Aww thank you for your reply, I do appreciate it , yes I will definitely take your advice. No more non plain foods . I guess eating out Is a no no . We can't win no matter what we eat . I don't mind the weight loss , I wasn't big but nothing wrong with losing a few pounds here and there . Now have to think how to get out of my upcoming birthday dinner . My husband and children will insist on going as its my 50th in 2 weeks

Stay well x

Hi there. It’s so depressing when you eat something you fancy and get a bad reaction like that. It’s so easy to forget yourself especially when it’s a special occasion or on holiday 🫤. Of course you must have a nice worry-free birthday dinner. Do you take any medication? I’ve been prescribed Mebeverine and have found that if I take some before a meal that might cause issues I can usually avoid a flare up. For example last night we went out for a Thai meal so I took some before and this morning I’m fine. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t careful to avoid any trigger foods! Good luck and hope you have a fab birthday.

I was prescribed mebeverine, it doesn't do well with me . It makes me constipated. I have IBS (D) I'm just taking peppermint oil capsules and peppermint tea. It is a pain finding what to eat , I give up lol . I'll just have to live on soup and crackers lol 😆

I do cook home made foods, mainly rice and curries . I guess take aways are off the agenda. I stopped eating processed foods like potato waffles, fish fingers , chicken nuggets I realised its the coating and all the preservatives that causes the issues. Thank you so much for your kind words , it really helped me .

Stay well xx

Thank you. I found Mebeverine on its own did that so the pharmacist prescribed me Fybogel with Mebeverine. It really helps!

ive had stomach bowel issues all my life even as little boy i remember having stomach issues i never gained any weight and was really skinny .my mum took me to the doctors then i had loads of tests in hospital but they couldnt find any problem but the tests were really basic i dont remember even giving any blood tests . i had severe IBS in my late 20s this vanished then in my mid to late 40s my abdomen ballooned and i ended up with diverticulitis . Even after this settled my abdomen never really reduced down then i noticed an unbilical hernia i had probably all my life getting bigger and bigger and it began causing digestive issues even swallowing and eating was causing me issues aswell as feeling sick i had an ultrasound scan it ends up bring two hernias so now im on the list for surgery . i believe that i may have had an unbilical hernia all of my life that may have caused my bloating and loss of appetite im looking forward to getting them repaired

Yes, most restaurant food is very tricky indeed. The last time I was invited out for lunch and we went to a restaurant/pub I tried just egg and chips, and wow that was appreciated. The chips were lovely, triple-cooked and were the best I'd ever tasted. I was fine on a couple of fried eggs too. Next day, my gut was fine. Not everyone would feel like that after that meal though but it suited me.

But I know, not all restaurants offer such plain options. Baked potatoes are a good bet too. With maybe a small green salad you can pick at and find things in it that are OK for you . Usually a bit of green salad is OK for me (lettuce, rocket, watercress, spinach etc)

Don't eat the potato skins if you have IBS D. Beware of garlic! But it's so difficult in restaurants.

I can usually manage fish and chips too, but daren't eat too much of the batter on fish, and have to pick it off. I don't care what other people think -that I'm picky with my food or what. I am beyond caring what other people judge of me.

hi

The dietary restrictions we make, and have to make , with IBS are difficult and tedious.

I am sorry, you are scared to go to the doctors, but you know that if it is something serious, the sooner you go the sooner it could be treated. This is the best option, better than leaving it.

However, it is likely there is nothing serious, and although the tests are a pain, they would put your mind at rest

There are many potential allergens in a burger, so too in the sauces.

Yes indeed, here we go again. I'm Neve sure what kicks my flares off (into the third since 9/2021 and non-flare periods have been shorter than the flare periods). I've had certain foods coinciding with a sudden deterioration (there was I thinking it was safe to eat a nice juicy -but small- fillet steak. Nope. Bad move). Junk foods: fish and chips bad (it's the batter on the fish it seems, even home made is not good but chips are fine). KFC without bun/wrap and coleslaw OK. MacD bacon roll meal sometimes works, big mac meal sometimes but have not risked for ages. My god those sizzling bacon rolls outside DIY stores are soooo tempting.
