I'm new here lol.... IBS Sufferer - Question

Hey guys so just joined this network as it seems if you're not a sufferer of IBS, you can be misunderstood... (I'm quite new to having IBS, only suffered for 3 years on and off)

It seems that certain foods I eat which don't agree with me I get a strong feeling of either sickness (but can't be sick) or either indigestion.... I also get terrible terrible stomach cramps along with loose bowel movements or sometimes constipation (typical symptoms)

I was previously on dycloverine tablets for my cramps, I didn't take them often I must admit only as and when but seemed to still find even when I'm stressed it didn't stop the cramps from occuring... I have now been prescribed a high dose of buscopan to take 3-4 times a day and so far I'm sticking to it and things seem to be getting better. Does anyone else have any experience in taking either of these tablets after I increase the dose? I'm starting to be more strict with the food I eat, so making a note of the foods that don't agree with me as admittedly as this came on so suddenly I just carried on eating food as & when I wanted haha....

Any advice or tips would be appreciated !!

Thanks :D

Personally I would suggested it is the food that you eat that will control (or influence) your symptoms, more or less. Medication often just suppresses symptoms and rarely corrects a condition, and might even cause the condition in the first place, or exacerbate an established chronic illness.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah I do understand it only helps for cramps and stuff but I do suffer with cramps badly so that was my only question! I’ve started a food diary and have already started to eliminate a few foods which are causing me troubles but so far the buscopan seems to be helping. Thanks

Only other thig would be... once I eliminate a food.. so I find like a lot of dairy products trigger my symptoms and other fatty foods. Does this mean I can never eat that type of food again or can I reintroduce it slowly? Because sometimes when I eat and not having a flare up I get no symptoms! Thanks

I follow a plant based diet so it probably will not surprise you for me to say you should remove dairy from your diet 😊

If you look at low FODMAP diet schedules they suggest deleting dairy during the restriction phase because Lactose is a complex sugar. Many Asian, Indian nationalities, and a fair number of Caucasians are allergic or intolerant to diary products.

Try removing milk and cheese. There are many nut, grain and soy 'milk' alternatives in the supermarkets for milk and nut derived 'cheeses' to choose from.

Good luck

Hi Yeah so I drink Alpro soya milk- used to as a child as cows milk didn’t agree and have done again for 4 years or so ( hate the taste of milk anyway) I don’t eat much other dairy, I’ve got dairy free butter to have with toast etc and also lactose free cheese to try out in small small amounts and will see how I get on! Mines usually alcohol/ fatty fast foods that are the worsttttt. Seems like you have your diet planned out though so well done 👌 I just find it hard to give up those tasty foods lol

I love tasty food...just happens to be my normal diet.

Think about a low FODMAP diet across all the fermentable sugars next...

Have taken 8 buscopan a day for a while and they help a lot with cramps

I'm exactly like you and wondered the same thing! I'm yet to try busco but love Imodium. Try and take it once a month or Even once every two months as it's a real miracle. Are buscos hard to swallow?

Buscopan is to easy to swallow to be fair, such a small tablet & I take 3/4 times a day an hour before eating and so far cramps have settled down. The imodium for loose bowel do you mean or do you take for cramps too? :)

Just for LM yeah but try to lay off it. Can I take buscopan any time of the day?

Orangexoxo profile image
Orangexoxo in reply tojalapeno1234

Yep you can get prescribed by docs for a higher dosage/ more tablets- I currently am trying 3 times a day an hour before meals. You can take any time and usually helps your stomach cramps within 15 minutes, so whenever you feel a cramp coming on etc just take one and I’ve found it works well for me!

Well this sucks, I took one about two hours ago and had a horrible twinge in my stomach which leads to painful gas :(

Oh really are you sure it’s down to the buscopan? I normally take just either when i have a pain or just as and when a few times a day. Give it time and maybe take it before food and see how you get on !

It was only once or twice and probably unrelated but ugh... Just so sick of this whole thing now!!

I know it’s so frustrating trust me! If you do get a stomach cramp, try taking one after and see how you feel... They are supposed to be really good for cramps anyway & from experience their quite good... All fun and games 😫🥺

Thanks for the tips - I'm currently eating some pastries which always make me feel normal cos there stodgy..plus the pain I got wasn't a loose bm cramp so makes sense ! Let's see what happens - what foods are you OK with?

Ahhhh ok - Well defo wait it out and see. It’s hard to say really I really just eat anything without thinking when I have no symptoms (reckless lol) but I’ve eliminated things like dairy, cows milk included so I have soua and lactose free cheese. I find that I’m ok with bread, gluten free crisps, chicken etc & berries/ grapes are good. I’m trying to stay away from fatty foods/ sauces and alcohol and I find those the worsssst for triggering my symptoms! Every days a new challenge tho so hoping to find some foods that I’m ok with, just need to let my flare up settle and keep drinking water etc

You're like me, fine with bread and chicken etc but I'm petrified to try grapes as I know they're highly acidic.... Sauce also kicks me off and haha yes alchy is weirdly either fine for me or torture, it calms my anxiety down which is relieving but I have to pay for it. That buscopan has actually made me feel human again, is it meant to do what Imodium does?

Yeah sounds similar ... As I know it works for stomach cramps and helps relax your stomach due symptoms related to IBS woo (:

Hi yes, I think being careful what you eat is most important. I had to cut out fibre, as that was my cause. I only eat 2 portions of fruit and veg a day, that's 60 grams a portion, so not very much at all! I used to eat so healthily, but if needs must!. Keep a diary of what you eat and then a note of what upsets you. You will get sorted. Good luck
