my doctor has advised I take this daily but I’m worried they will lose their effect over time and stop working. Does anyone else take Imodium daily and if so has this happened?
loperamide: my doctor has advised I take this... - IBS Network
loperamide
I only take these when I have loose BM as like you I am afraid that they will not have the desired effect and I generally keep some on me or in the house at all costs as when my BM's are not nice I end up taking 4/5 in a row does that help!!! and stop them when things settle!!! as on the leaflet it should give you more info there Well take care x
HI, I took Loperamide for a large number of years, but stopped about 2-years ago and now only take if I am going out and have worries about IBS.
By the end of my multiple years of use I was taking three every morning, but within weeks of stopping I felt much better and now using just a single tablet will block me up for 1-2 days.
hi - I used Imodium syrup for a few years and had no problems. It worked, and I did not need to increase the dose.
Hi. For me, I have been taking loperamide for years. It certainly helps me. I vary the dose though depending how I am feeling. Currently, I take one every morning, and then may be one or two more during the day. But, everyone is different. What works for others might not work for you, so you need to experiment.
Your main question was whether they will lose effect over time. I have never experienced that with taking loperamide.
You shouldn't take imodium daily. I take it when it's really bad. I rarely have to take it again. It will have a negative impact on your bowels eventually. Like all medicine does . Take when needed
Wish you well
Yes I've been taking them over 25 years and thank God they still work for me. My consultant prescribed to me and said I need to take them to live a better quality of life. I take Mebeverine and a half of Loperamide tablet daily but when going out I take 2 or 3 tablets to avoid fecal incontinence. I now have accidents and wear always discreet incontinence pants . Loperamide doesn't stop working it relaxes your bowel. Anxiety will make IBS worse it's a vicious circle don't worry just take them. Hope this helps.x
I use Loperamide as and when I’m going out and need security. Then I’ll take 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon if out for the evening. If I’m planning to drive on the motorway I’ll take 2 the evening before then 2 that morning. It hasn’t let me down and I’ve been taking regularly for 2 years now. Taking 1 a day would be ok and just change to suit your daily activities.
I also only take Loperamide when needed as they can give me headaches and also can cause me to have constipation. I always carry the instant version with me as you can just melt one on your tongue and you do not need water. As others have said you need to experiment with the dosage, maybe try them at home so you do not need to worry about the dosage being too low. As we all know it is always trial and error with IBS, we all react differently.
Ive been on daily loperamide for 30 years, I take 30mg 2x per day. They help massively to regulate the loose BMs. If im having a day day or nee dto spend a lot of time away from facilities, I up the dose to 60mg in the morning and an additional 30mg mid day. That tends to stop most movement for about 24 hours.
Once thing settle i drop back to the maintenance dose or sometimes have a couple of days break and allow nature to take its course.
I've been taking Loperamide for 30 years now, one every evening until a few years ago when I changed to one every other day. I can't say I've had any problems, however if I don't take one for a few days I start having stomach cramps again
Hi, I have taken 2 of these daily for years. They did become less effective after I had my son though.Doctors said that can happen after childbirth due to changes in body/ hormones. So I followed a fellow sufferers recommendation and started taking 2 straightaway in the mornings before a BM or straight after my first BM in morning and they work better this way.I do try to have 1 day free a week when I am off work.Hope this info helps
I have loperamide on prescription. My GP assured me it won’t lose its effectiveness over time, therefore needing more to have the same effect, as it doesn’t cross the blood/brain barrier. It works by slowing the gut down and is my very best friend 😂 You’ll be fine - enjoy it!
