nausea and loss of appetite

I am still struggling with an IBS flare-up after a week and I am suffering from a lot of nausea (not actually being sick but feeling sick) and a general loss of appetite. Does anyone have any tips for dealing with this? I am wondering if it would be beneficial to just go on a sort of bread and water diet for a few days to get it all out of my system but I also don’t want to make it worse.

Have you tried searching here? Just looking at the right side of the page on your post, I see a number of other posts all saying "nausea." Heck, maybe those would be a good start.

Nausea can be due to trapped wind. You could try Rennie Deflatine for this. If you are suffering from diarrhoea also, you could try eating white jasmine rice and some lean protein for a couple of days to give your colon a rest since these are digested in the small intestine.

Buy some OTC good meds for IBS/wind etc. The nausea is par for the course with a flare. But you do not want to just eat bread and water even for a few days. Your body will still need more nutrients so try going on what is known as more bland foods or foods that are more white or beige in colour but still ones that have soluble fibre which does help with wind and bloating etc.. This will allow you to eat say scrambled eggs, porridge made with oats, lean fish, poultry and have it with things like potatoes (without skins) etc.. some fruit is okay, try bananas or melon. I am just coming out of a flare (in my case it could be IBS or IBD but more likely IBS) that has dragged on a bit but the nausea was much more prevalent the first 2 weeks. I ate what I have mentioned above and took Buscopan and peppermint capsules etc.. Hope this helps

Yes when I have a flare up I try eating lightly to help recover. First chamomile tea & a plain biscuit, then some plain yoghurt, or Rice Krispies then if that’s ok progress on to plain food. Rice, avo ,chicken etc or soup. Dairy free, no spices, no caffeine, no chilli. I get quite reactive to various food during an episode, so eat what’s more soothing for you. We’re all different.

Chamomile tea is a mild antispasmodic.

If I’m gurgly I find buscopan helps even if there are no bowel symptoms. or you could try Mebeverine 1/2 hour before you eat.

If you’re still nauseous with no appetite by end of week, best go to GP to get checked out. Take care.

Nausea is caused because the stomach acid is not acid enough. Acidify it by drinking diluted lemon juice or diluted (apple) vinegar. Don't try to taste it, just clug away and rinse your mouth with some water afterwards. Also Winfong has the best comment over here: search this site. So much info from people having the same problem. You are not alone. Best to you.
