hi everyone, can anyone help, I have twice been admitted as emergency. First was in March for bowel obstruction and then a few weeks later for diverticulitis, I’ve since had 2 lots of antibiotics for diverticulitis at home as I refused to go back to hospital. I was supposed to have a colonoscopy but had to ask them them to stop as it was so painful even with sedation, I was told it was painful because of diverticulitis and bowel loops. My doctor then advised me to have a virtual ct scan colonoscopy but when she phoned the gastroenterologist team they have now referred me to go to emergency surgery clinic. I have been in constant pain since March and am not sure what’s causing this, I don’t understand why gastro would refer me to surgery clinic without knowing the full picture

Hi I’m sorry to hear what you are having to go through. I’m not much help I’m afraid. Only to offer support & say I’m sure you have been referred to see if there are any more tests they can offer. I am sure they will not offer surgical intervention unless absolutely necessary.
I have diverticulosis & fear it turning into diverticulitis.
Best wishes for a speedy outcome 🤗
Sounds like you may have an abscess, which may need surgery. I was in that spot, but was able to finally fight out with big-time antibiotics. Spent a couple of days on the surgical ward as they watched it. If it had not gone down, I would have been rushed into surgery. Turns out my surgeon was a lot more knowledgeable and helpful than my GP and gastro.
Sounds nasty, what I don’t understand is why now are they going to see me, I’ve already been there had the scans, treated in hospital, sent home had 2 more lots of antibiotic from my doctor, so why now?
Probably because they feel it's progressed or is particularly difficult to diagnose/progress? Given that, maybe they simply want to play it safe.
I honestly don't know though. You might want to ask them.
As I mentioned before, you may actually be in better hands with the surgeon.
Can't help you with regards the referral but understand very well the painful colonoscopy. My Gastro had to use a paediatric scope for my recent colonoscopy as my diverticular sacs had got worse and I was told previously that I had a loopy bowel. You still have to take the bowel prep for a virtual C but it should be more comfortable as no scope is used. Good Luck
Thank you for your reply, I too had a paediatric scope but even then it was still too painful that’s why my doc said she’d would put me in for virtual scan and this is now the outcome? What did they do for you having found out the problem or have they just left you to get on with it
I’ll let you know what happens to me next
