is diverticulitis heredity

hi, new to group.

I’m 74 female and although I’ve had 2 colonoscopies where 2 benign polyps were removed I often only manage to poo pellets but about hour later poo normal.

My mum suffered diverticulitis and I’m wondering could I also have this? My GP has diagnosed ibs after a severe bleed which a small camera showed small Haemorrhoids and a skin tag. I was prescribed suppositories and cream and due another colonoscopy in 2028.

I did have severe pain in stomach and right side but was given luctolose and not had any pain since. I’ve had gallbladder removed, full hysterectomy, mastectomy, thyroid removed and 2 hip ops.

I just get so scared that it’s cancer although my gp reassures me it isn’t.

Is this normal ibs? Things took a turn after my hysterectomy and I was told after op that it can cause ibs - wish I’d known beforehand.

Thank you anyone who replies to this

IBS does not cause bleeding, but haemorrhoids obviously can. How far back was your last colonoscopy? A colonoscopy would pick up diverticular disease as well as the polyps that were found at that time.

Thanks for your reply. My last colonoscopy was February 2023 and they found 8cm polyps.

Polyp was benign and the piles I’ve had since 1980’s. I’m in my 70’s and skin is thin and the hysterectomy has caused this - something to do with hormones- the same as my breast cancer. I took hormone tablets years ago but came off them as they caused aches and muscle problems.

Divertticular disease is present in about 50% of people between 50-80, and increases as we age. Most people do not get any symptoms, but some have pain and bowels are affected. Hysterectomy can cause intestines to shift into the void left by the uterus which can also affect the bowels.

Thanks for reply - definitely a learning curve.

Do you think a colonoscopy would have picked this up?.

My ibs seems to have settled. I think the more I panic about cancer returning, it affects my stomach. I’ve always be a nervy person.

My lady GP relates to ibs as she suffers from it and everything I described with my symptoms, she just kept nodding but did give my tummy a good feel.

Yes, A colonoscopy would show divertiular disease, so would a CT scan. I suffer with it, it causes me severe pain and seems to be worse since hystwrwctomy 3 years ago

I think it is. Mum had a hysterectomy, had thyroid op, gall bladder removal the same as me. She always struggled with her stomach. Luckily she never got breast cancer.

I have noticed that people who have had gallbladder removal seem to be suffering with divirticulitis and IBS .personally I believe its connected and I wish that I had been warned about the severity of divirticulitis and IBS as mine has been chronic and severe diarrhoea since I had my gallbladder out I have lost over 2 stone and weight still dropping because I can't eat without pain .I am very sorry you are going through so much yourself alot is trying what works for you .yes it sounds like you could possibly have divirticulitis, however I am no doctor and perhaps another colonoscapy is needed sooner than 2028 .have a good day my lovely

Thank you so much for replying- it’s so nice to have someone to reach out to.

I will definitely mention this to my GP.

I too wasn’t warned until after all my ops. After my hysterectomy I had to have 6 months off work as the diarrhoea was awful. I went to hypnotist in the end, which did seem to help.

My GP just gave me Lactulose and recommended buscapan.

Yes the diarrhoea can get very severe as that's what I been going through lately .I have my 3rd colonoscapy tomorrow at 3 pm .they given me plenvu to take .I don't think I've got anything left to poo out !!! Even when I'm empty I have the urge to go .I've tried buscupan mebeverine imodium nothing helped me then they gave me peppermint capsules but I have a sensitivity to those they give me a rash behind my ears and bad indigestion and peppermint oozes through every pore in my body but they do work .makes my heart a bit racey to .I wonder if the doctor will tell you it's related with gallbladder removal as over time I've got to know people with same conditions as me and it strikes me as very strange that they all had gallbladder removal and now suffer with divirticulitis and IBS at different severities .you have been through an awful lot and healing takes a long time ,if that's to happen .I am fed up hearing its something else I have to live with .my anxiety is now through the roof because of this ibs and dv .I'll be lucky if I can leave the house .no doctor seems to understand how debilitating this can be so my heart comes out for you and I hope you get some answers

Bless you. I have stopped doing all things I liked. No family outings anymore. No eating fish and chips at seafront. I’m sure people think it’s put on but yesterday was spent on and off loo.

There’s hardly any public toilets about now which doesn’t help.

I hate taking that plenvu and then having to travel through town to hospital- I always wear an adult nappy just in case with plenty of spare fresheners and underwear.

Good luck for tomorrow xx

Aww darling I completely understand .I did try and go out down the beach .I had to take a spare pair of knickers gloves fannypads wet wipes and my volterol suppositories .the public toilet was 30 p I had to use it 3 times while I was there, that's bloody 90 p just for the toilet and my anxiety was high .decided it wasn't worth it .I'd rather stay by my toilet at home at least the anxiety isn't there at home .I am passed caring if other people believe me or not .its very real for me and I don't feel the need to explain myself anymore .you will get there to because its you goung through this and only others who go through it to will truely understand. Have a good day my lovely .hopefully chat again sometime .take care of you today
