Hello

It's not a good idea to take laxatives long term or be reliant upon them. It's much safer to eat the right foods and to try and get a balance by eating foods which don't lead to constipation or diarrhea. It's a case of trying different things and finding what suits you best. Eat as naturally as you can avoiding as much processed food as you can. Study different foods for fibre etc. Eat smaller meals, eating slowly. Exercise each day doing something you enjoy, this helps sluggish bowels, eg, walking, swimming. You might find your guts need time to readjust after stopping the laxatives.

By the nature of laxatives, they do make your stool soft and mushy xxx

Hi Ella1992 There was a professor on TV who was on Steph's Packed Lunch. They did a survey about poo believe it or not and there was quite a high percentage who had constipation and took laxatives. He advised not to stop them suddenly but to come off then slowly as your body gets used to them and increase your soluble fibre slowly.

You seem to have done it the right way. Ella1992. I suppose you have got to stop your tummy going back to how it was and caused you to take laxatives. It is so difficult isn't it. All the best x

I've been taking laxido as a last resort after trying everything for years. For the first 3 weeks of just 1 a day it was brilliant emptying my bowels every morning and no stomach cramps. Then they seemed to stop working and stomach cramps back when I do go. Don't know what to do now, keep taking them or stop and then go back to severe constipation. I eat a good diet and walk on average 30 miles a week and feel relatively healthy just fed up with this constant situation!

I’m having a rubbish time with Movicol (Laxido). I’ve taken it for several years every day as I have pelvic floor dysfunction/rectocele repair/ibs C. Due to my muscle problem after prolapse surgery I have to take something every day and I was told by my consultant that Movicol was fine to use like this. I have a few days ok and then the bad side effects kick in. Awful bloating which I’m unable to pass. Gurgling and churning which makes me feel sick and exhausted and then a constant need to go for a poo but just passing small bits. I’m at the end of my tether with it x
